Nissan engine into pajero

Nissan engine into pajero
Hello guys and gals,
I have an 84 Paj, of which the engine has had enough, i also have a rebuilt nissan sr20 engine from another car that i plan on fitting into the pajero. Conversion wise its pretty simple to fit in, i am a welder/fabricator by trade so there is no worries with fabrication.
I was simply wondering if any of you, or you know of anyone who has done such a thing. It would be nice to do a little light reading on the subject.
I searched on here and google, but to no avail.
Thanks.
Andrew.

What's the torque curve like on the SR20? I've always thought of them as high-revving hot-hatch type engines, which doesn't strike me as ideal for lugging around over 2 tonnes of metal and glass with the aerodynamics of a brick.
The 2.6 isn't a power-packed donk, but it does have plenty of torque. For me, there's no contest for what I'd rather have under the bonnet (for the off-road driving I like to do.)

Thats exactly what i was thinking.-Scott- wrote:What's the torque curve like on the SR20? I've always thought of them as high-revving hot-hatch type engines, which doesn't strike me as ideal for lugging around over 2 tonnes of metal and glass with the aerodynamics of a brick.

A mate has an SSS Pulsar with SR20 and its useless until about 4000rpm and thats in a 1 ton hatch.
bulletproof engine mate....sounds like a good conversion to me if you ask me the sr20 is one of the best engines ever built its also quite torquie compared to other 2l out there....but like others have said its up high a set of cams will fix that......if your goin to the trouble why not go sr20det? (i assume you mean sr20de)
iv had a list of cars all with that engine in it in both turbo and non turbo...

your right jonnyjtop, they are a good engine but they also are very revvy (read, alot of fun to drive in a hot hatch) and as pointed out they have a severe lack of low torque!

Hey guys.
Yeah its an SR20DET, i would not even bother putting the non turbo one in.
There is a few reasons that i am fitting this engine into the paj, but firstly i'll shed some light on what car the engine came from. It is the engine out of my drift car (i tried my hand at drifting for a few years while i was out of 4x4ing) and in drift you need low down torque. I built this engine for low down torque by a few methods including increasing the capacity, and fitment of a turbocharger producing its most torque from around 1500 to around 4500. Its actually a very responsive motor, i built it well.
Anyway, the reasons for fitting this motor are as follows:
- As i already have the motor, and have parted out the rest of the car, i already have everything required to do the conversion, hence no outlay of any money.
- The engine in my paj is really stuffed, and it seems so is every other paj engine in the states wreckers.
- And finally, no 4 cyl carb engine will touch this thing for power, torque, or fuel economy.
So seeing as the cost is nothing pretty much and i can't get another motor near as good, i thought why not, hehe.
Will indeed be a great conversion, i cant wait til its in. The paj now is using way too much fuel for the power it gives me (or lack of) and is becoming unreliable. It also no longer really has enough power to tackle any real fun 4x4 courses. Other coming mods to the paj will be a coil ass end, and maybe (and i mean maybe) i was thinking about uteing it.
Today i started making the adapter plate for the SR to fit in, i should have this done this week, and then i can start on rear half of exhaust fab, and i will start on engine mounts this week if i get time.
Thanks for the comments lads.

sorry i replyed just before you submitted the post....an sr20det is a monster of an engine................and will be more than enough if not too much power for the pajero.....espesially if its worked a bit....you can muck around with turbos ect to make them spool up earlier.....from the engine i had built for my s15 i actually put in sr20de cams as it helped to reduce lag and made more torque!!!

Yeah i too have stuffed around with many a import, but i built thius engine purely for torque, which is why i am bothering with this. I have had people say it'll be too much, but it all comes done to how i use my foot.
It'll be a bit de-tuned to suit 4x4ing and being a daily, it doesn't need heaps of grunt. I'm only aiming it at no more than 250 hp, only using a 2.5" exhaust system with 2 mufflers and cat, and will only be running 7 pound of boost.
In the end, dont drive it like a race car and stuff dont break.

Also, it seems i fail at searching. Does anyone know if the long wheelbase leaves are much stiffer than the swb leaves? I want to replace my sagged springs for now with somethinbg from a wreck, there is an ideal set in a lwb at the wreckers.
Could i just remove a leaf? will it still have the same height?
Thanks guys

Oh yeah for sure i'll post up progress pics as i go. Today i drew up most of the adapter plate on auscad, took a few more measures and drew a bit more. Tomorrow i should be done drawing the plate to about 90% complete, which is enough to trial fit everything.
Anyone have an idea if the lwb leaves will be ideal?
So this is the pajero
and this is the Motor going in
Enjoy.

wooooooooooooooo go the sr in a pajero.....iv got a standard blacktop in my garage too..maybe that will go in mine now too!!!!!!put on that frontmount too it will look mad....sorry for all the replys but im really excited about this conversion i thought i was the only crazy one...

Indeed, as well as being all rebuilt and capacity raised to 2.1, its also a 96 Black top type X motor, and i have matching ecu and loom aswell. I'm not fitting the front mount that was originally on it, i swapped it last night for a smaller one as it was too big. I finished drawing up the adapter today, just need to draw in the mitsu gearbox bolt holes, which i need a box to use as a model.
more to come.

mate looking good! sounds like a you have done a lot of planning and got it all figured out, the new turbo sound should raise a couple of eyebrows at the lights lolPIGGY_PAJERO wrote:Indeed, as well as being all rebuilt and capacity raised to 2.1, its also a 96 Black top type X motor, and i have matching ecu and loom aswell. sounds good if i was in your neck of the woods id be there with bells on to help you with it all........have you thought of changing the box to something a little more durable?? i think that box is identicle to a sigma gearbox of the same era.....im sure it will hold up for a bit but just a suggestion...

Thanks guys for the kind words.
Actually i have considered changing to a stronger box, seeing as i have to make an adapter anyway, and havent yet applied the mitsu measurements to the cad drawing, i still have a chance to do so. I was going to ring a wrecker today and see what i can get for what dollars.
Preferably i'd like to stick to mitsubishi, just so the shafts fit straight away, so i may consider a later pajero/triton box, i think i read they were stronger than early ones?
This is the cooler i'm using.
The car will be fully engineer plated and legal, so i cant cut into body to run piping. Luckily the SR is about 100mm shorter than the mitsu engine, so i'm mounting the radiator back 75mm, and putting the cooler in the radiator's spot, while having it all shrouded off to keep the airflow where i want it.
Another shot of the motor, Mmmm, clean
