Busted a CV!

Post by Westoztroopa »

Well it's finally happened. Went camping/4x4ing in Collie this weekend and while attempting the top section of the Goat track I obviously gave it a bit too much stick while trying to get through some deep ruts. Loud bang and then I was going no-where. Had to be towed the rest of the way up. Still it was good fun driving back in 2wd... :D
1st one one 4 years and with the front locker and all, so was going to happen eventually. Still not happy! :bad-words:

Dunno? But going by how much Ive been forking out for other Jack parts in the last couple of weeks I'd say so. Been handing over too much of my hard earned to the mechanic lately so will have a go at doing this one my self...

Gazz, paid around $129 for just the outer CV joint kit. Turns out I now need the inner and outer joints as it was discovered that the inner joints' splines were stripped. Apparently it is common for the inner and outer joints to need replacing simultaneously. Am about to price up the full cv kit so will let you know... Dont know what brand of cv I obtained but it was from a supposedly reputable supplier so should be fine...

Cheers,

Well my old man and I tried to do the cv fix on the weekend and as per previous post discovered that not only had the outer cv been absolutely shattered but the but the inner cv splines were stripped.
Having to wait til monday to organise parts and having to get home to Nannup for work etc(3.5 hours from Perth), I borrowed Dads Pajero and the timing belt goes when I was about 3 quarters the way home! :bad-words: Just cant win at the moment...

Anyway, am attaching a couple of pics of the shattered cv for the record. you can see how all internal components were shatterd and a crack in the outer casing.

Cheers,

Noel

thanks for the info noel I was able get an outer $145 don’t know if the inner is ok find out tommow when it gets fitted .i`m thinking I should start taking it easy ,lately every time I go out I break something, in Jan I had to replace the turbo ,the jackaroo turbo can not be fixed they are ceramic roller bearing turbo and at $1500 for a new one I was not happy .in Dec I trashed on alernater for the second time (full of mud)and the list go on.

Woohoo! Finally got the Jack back.

Turns out the stripped spline was not the inner cv joint but a bare CV shaft which apparently joins the two. Apologies for my ignorance.

Anyway final breakdown for Gazza and anyone else who is interested:

Outer CV joint kit #ACV-IS193 - $122.73 + GST
Bare CV Shaft #ACS-BARE - $98.64 +GST
Boot kit #ACB-224 - $18.18 +GST

For anyone in Perth I can thoroughly recommend Allans CV Joints in Osbourne Park ph: (08) 9244 4190.
Very helpful and reliable.
