The tacho in my HiLux (1991, LN106R) used to jump around erratically, then eventually stopped working all together.
I then replaced the 3L (2.8L) engine with a 5L (3.0L) and still no action from the tacho.
I'm wondering if someone can confirm that what I think is the tacho signal sender on the 5L, actually is it.
Below are some photos of what I think is the sender, but my workshop manual makes no mention of either the tacho, or this 'thing' on the fuel pump. It just looks like a small bolt with an 8mm nut, holding on a green wire.
I've searched multiple forums and found mention that it may be on the fuel pump, but couldn't find any photos or descriptions of what it looks like.
Cheers for any help
The photo's are looking down from the passenger side.

HiLux Tacho Sender (5L)

I have a Gregory's manual for the Hilux 5L/5L-E and there's a picture of the injector pump for the 5L on page 93.
It shows the tachometer sensor on the engine block side of the injector pump.
If with both engines you have no tacho then maybe the problem is in the dash. Check and see that all the connections are correct behind the dash and that something hasn't come lose/broken off.
Hope that helps
