its not a brand name and we're not going to be doing any competition stuff in it, but its more to get us out of trouble
no mention or any warrenty, i would not buy it - no history with no brand name and not that cheap when thats considered.
I would go a tigerz winch or tmax for an extra 100 or 200 and get a decent warrenty and at least a credible rep.

i agree but i'm not going to risk my whole car and have to leave it down in a valley or something just because i wanted to save a grand by having a crappy winch instead of just buying right to start with
cheap winches are in the same category as mongrels, ebay electric superchargers and chinese lockers
Why would you be leaving your car somewhere?
winches are juts a lazy mans way of getting out. Not saying they are bad thing to have, i'm buying one for my patrol.
We have pulled my patrol from bogged up to the chassis in slop with out needing a bar mounted winch, done countless other recoveries with no bar mounted winches.
Sure it takes longer and is damn hard work, but you don't need to leave your car anywhere.
you should always have back up recovery gear anyway, so IF it does fail, you can hand winch or do what ever els is needed
what if your wheeling by yourself?
quite often go wheeling with one car. It doesn't have a winch. only once have i made a phone call to get help. but only because it was getting dark and raining and water level was raising fast. i could have gotten out with help and with out a winch.
anyway that not the point. he wanted recommendations. I made one
I reckon the dude we pulled out of the drink on monday wished he had even a basic winch. he was rather happy we happened to drive on the road past him walking.

T-Max gets my vote every time! We have been using a 10 000lbs T-Max on the front of a new hilux to pull HD mains cables through under ground conduits at work.
The Boss said i dont care if you burn it out just get them in! So thats what we did, single line pull, foot hard on the brake it was dragging the new Lux with all 4 wheels locked up on patchy grass / dirt. Had to chock all four wheels so it would keep pulling the cables. Im talking 4x 53mm cables + earth cable, signal cables for the mechanical switch boards etc, 9 cables all up over a 112M run. We were flogging the arse off it, all day every day for about 2 full weeks and the sucker keeps comming back for more. I probly wont use my winch 10 times in the life of the truck!
Any winch can fail in the middle of no where, reguardless how much you pay. It's just like any 4wd whether its a $5000 shitter or a brand new patrol, disco, 200. There is always the chance its gonna stop and leave you stranded. I mean we dont all buy H1 Hummers because they are the toughest.
So for me Value for money, reliabilty is a T-max. I havnt heard one bad report. I wont feel i bought 2nd best because i know what they are capable of!

when A Mans Toyshop is selling the tmax 9000 for $500, it's hard to go past
I dont know how well it goes as it hasnt arrived but i just ordered a tigerz11 winch. comes with plasma rope and ready to go for cheaper then any of the brand winches and with a decent warranty...
the proof will be in the pudding. tufftruck challenge is 24 days away and it will be used at some point in a fairly extreme environment...
It depends how often you plan on using the winch, and how "stuck" you plan on getting.
If you're on a budget, i'd go a Tigerz11 winch. They can be optioned with synthetic rope, Titan-style solenoid boxes and remote wireless controllers. His customer service is second to none.
If you want a brand name for any particular reason, go with whatever has the best warranty.

$500!!
That IS cheap
I knew the chinese no names were this cheap, but the T-Max was in the same test and didn't do TOO bad. For less than a third the price, that's tempting.
I could never see the sense in spending $$$ on a winch an then leaving it it in the weather and had planned on making a removable cradle that attaches to the front (and rear) bar so that its not in the weather all the time. (I know its been done by brawn and Warn, but BIG $$$!!!) I just have to sort a way to do the electrics.
I like $500 for a purchase price though!!

IMWO dont put all your faith in a magazine that has advertising budgets to deal with...
Virtually everyone I go offroad with regulary, apart from comp trucks, run Come-Up which is the Premier with a different badge and is sold by ARB agents in NZ. These have proven over many years and a lot of hard work, to be very very reliable and great value for money. Quite a bit cheaper than Warn or Superwinch but at least equal to them in quality.
As a side not the Superwinch EP9 is the exact same winch as a 9000 Premier / Come-Up but with Superwinch badges! And it isn't Superwinch that designed and manufacture it!!! Sort of says it all really!
