i just replaced the oil in my 80 series gearbox with a pretty standard 80/90 manual transmission oil, much thicker than what came out of it.
now on cold starts its really hard to get into gear and when warm, gears grind and are generally dificult.
can anyone tell me the recomended gearbox oil for a manual 80 series? as i have since heard that most toyo gearboxes take auto trans oil
thanks heaps

Castrol VMX-M, originally designed for mitsubishi gearboxes, but appears to be working quite well in toyota boxes aswell. However it is GLi4 rating, not GLi5 as specified by toyota so if you do alot of towing and heavy work, you may need to consider some of the synthetic lubricants around or change it out more often.
That said, VMX-M hasnt worked for me, but there are certainly allot more people around who are happy with than those who arent.

Hi, I'm a mechanic that works in a mine that runs 147 landcruisers from 75 ser through to the new v8 turbo deisei 70 ser utes aswell as 105 ser, 80 series & troopys. we run castrol/BP 85/140 in the front dif & transfer, BP easy shift 75/85 in the G/box & BP lim slip in the rear diff as we found this combonation of oils works the best as the people that drive them don't care about them and drive them like thay stole them. hope this helps.
