Transfer Case Park Brake
My exhaust winds itself from the turbo on the driver’s side to the passenger side, it makes the cross over from the driver’s side to the passenger side behind my transfer case and there isn’t enough space to clear the transfer case park brake assembly.
My question is, what would happen if I simply cut the exhaust pipe off at the transfer case? (at a reasonabley safe spot) so that I don’t have to put up with the rest of the length of pipe going behind my TC and all the way through to the back of the rig. I know its illegal to have less and 4 inches clearance from the cab, but I don’t drive it around town unless im heading out bush or camping and I cant justify getting an axhasut system fitted because im doing a motor transplant soon.
Please help, I really want to fit this TC park brake, im sick of parking against things.

the main thing is it must exit the vehicle well behind the rear most opening door or window
i have had to drive with an exhaust leak under my cab and i got very sleepy quite fast in the middle of the day was quite scary.

Serious?? Sh1t, didnt know it was that bad. Its a soft top (see the pic below) and the transfer case where i want to chop the exhaust is mid way along the wheel base. Do u reckon ill be safe?
My main concern was missing a muffler (what effect will that have on niose etc) and having the exhaust too short. Its got about a meter and a half from the back of the turbo to the transfer case where i want to chop it.
Thanks for ur input.

noise wont be too bad the engines are pretty quiet in the toyo diesels and the turbo will keep the sound down to. but half was along the wheelbase wont be great or legal.
can you not just mod your existing exhaust?

Thanks for that mate, great help.
I figured i might be struggling with short length only being around door handle length along the length of the car.
I wish :( all my tools/bender/welder are all at my old joint down the Gold Coast, new place in bris is too small. In addition, its a silly jap model, so the turbo and exhaust tun down the drivers side straight to my fuel tank, so even if i wanted to mod it, it would still have to cross over behind the transfer case
Do u know any other way for me to get it a little further back without corssing past the TC or moving my fuel tank to the other side?
Thanks fo that

thanks for the pic mate, much appreciated.
One last question,
How'd u get it on the other side of the rai? did u go under?
If so, do you have probs with clearance?
This will only be temp fix until the motor transplant is done, but the last thing i want to do it tear the exhaust of on a rock lol
Thanks again for your input, hot looking hilux too

hahaha sounds like fun.
I guess the only way to find out is chop it and if it screws up then i better get the bender and welder out and do the job properly.
U wouldnt happen to know of a place round bris that'll sell a decent system for the hilux or even if u (or anyone else) might have info and pics for making one up, something simple and short that pops out under the rear wheel arch, can i use tubing or is there a special type?.
it might just be worth doing untill the other motors in if i really want to run the TC park brake.
Thanks fo ryor input

i am running a 2 inch body lift and an 80series chassis so i ran over the top of the rail in the wheel arch
a mates truck has the long range tank in his lux and his dips under the rail just in front of the gearbox cross member then along the out side and it all sits above chassis
cheers

i think windows up with a soft top at night is a bad idea cause lots of co2 can sneak in around the gaps more so on the hiway or doing cruising
i did not believe it until it happened to me
it will not be super loud but will sound like a turbo diesel with no muffler
heaps of whistle
probably best to face it at the ground if you can

sweet ones, will do.
I didnt belive it much, but ill take ur word on it and try it around town before i go cruising down the motorway asleep
looking forward to hearing the turbo wistle though lol
Good point, its got a downward kink before it turns to face the TC so ill give it the chop there.
Thanks again, ill post again if i run into hassles.
Cheers

yeah kinda forgot about that.
I reckon i could bear with the black stuff for a few weeks though.
Is a straight through system cheap enough to buy or is it cheaper just to buy some 2.5 - 3 inch pipe and bent it myself?
Cheers

had a look again over the weekend before chopping it, moving the fuel tank seems like a little less effort than the other options.
Willy Hilux, What all is envolved in moving the tank? asside from new mounts to hold it. do i need a new fuel cap on the other side or can i run it across? and what about senders/elecrtonics?
Thanks

ThrashLux lol that looks awesome.
If i had the space and the know-how i would be mad keen.
Thanks for the pics.
Stock $Runner, did u mean that u chopped it under the cab near the transfer case and u dont have any troubles at all??
I was keen to chop it thiss weekend but didnt find the time because i was sure that i would have to bend new pipe and spend hours fixing the pipe because of the issues was going to have gassing myself
But if ur saying that u drive around with it chopped under the cab and it doesnt give u trouble then i reckon i might just chop it tonight.
Got any pics??

Im sure its illegal too, but then again i think if either of us was picked up, we're sure to get a couple fines
Thanks again for your input and advice

I had one of my exhaust's fall off in the bush so it ended up exiting underneith the rear of the cab where the backseat passenger would sit, a mate and I drove around for most of the day like that then we both started to complain of having a headache and withing 10 minutes we were feeling really sick and dizzy to the point where I couldnt stand up anymore. After that experience I would never have a pipe exiting under a vehicle.
