80 series power window switch

Post by lwbmav »

I have a dodgy drivers side pwr window switch like a lot of people out there .
Are these reparable and is there any trick to removing them or do they just clip off.

If they cant be fixed where is the cheapest place to buy one?

thanks for any help

Mine was dodgy when I bought the 80, I pulled the switch apart and cleaned the contacts up, all good for a year now :D , also on the back of the plastic cover for each of the four window switches you will see there is a small tab about 2mm long, this limits how far the switch moves the contacts, I filed these off so that I was getting full travel as the contacts were a bit worn. Its pretty fiddly and may not go together, but you've got nothing to lose if you need to replace the switch anyway. Thay are ridiculously expensive!!

How hard is this to do?
I always ment to do this just never got around to looking into it.
I also want to auto up/down the other windows. Would this be doable and or easy?

There is a write up on ih8mud about it. It's pretty simple. you need to file some tabs off the switch to get the full range, and then solder a diode on to get it auto-up.

so yeh as long as you can handle a soldering iron it's a one banana job

there is a big thread on offroad80s on the auto up mod too, may be slightly more relevant then the USA one

to get the drivers side control switches out, just lift up the very front end of the plastic panel. it clips in but it is a strong clip

If you still need a replacement you mind have some luck at the wreckers as Camry ones are the same. Don't know what range of years though so not sure how new you can get. I got one really cheap and it works great. Might be similar ages but most likely the Camry one hasn't done as much use.

Had a look this arvo turns out my problem was the motor ,I have 2 80's at the moment so I pulled the switch from the other one to test.

Just gave the motor the "fix all" with a hammer and it's working at the moment .
Anyone know if the motors from door to door can be swapped?

I just got a spare switch from the wreckers this arvo after reading the write up on IH8MUD. Cost was $80 complete with the grey tim piece, diod for circuit board 30cents from Jaycar.
I didn't want to mod my good switch just in case it doesn't work, or I want to return it to standard at a later date.

This is the list I was told the switch's were common to:
Toyota Surf 1989-1997
4 Runner 1989-1997
80 Series Landcruiser
AE100 Series Corolla
MX83 Cressida
LX80 Chaser / cresta / MK11

Mine was out of the MX83 Cressida.
Just got to test the switch before modifing it, just in case it's dodgy and I have to return it.

i think u should just replace the pack, i got mide from ebay for 260 and it was a toyota one, i burnt out the motor at the sme time because my pack failed on the auto down and caused the motor to burn out. making the 260 job blow out to 500. if ur going to do the job, do it right the first time and dont stuff around, it will only cause problems later
