UHF problems please help

Post by Kingston_99 »

ok my UHF works fine i can hear people clear and dont cut out, but sometime mates say i cut out when i talk. they say sometimes they only hear 2 words out of an entire sentence.

i just changed my aireal to the fiber glass ones, also my hand piece (the mic), the cord on it that protects the wires from the outside as split and has started to fall apart and expose wires.

im going to get a new hand piece and see wat happens.

has anyone else had this problem and wat did u do?

Let me guess, you have bought a big long fibreglass one because "bigger is better"?

Have a look at your mates antennae (plural ;) ) and see if they have the short stubby ones.

Lesson one with UHF antennae, the longer they are the worse they will be in hilly territory, but the better they will be on the freeway. Conversely the short ones are better in hilly territory, but don't have the range on the highway.

This results from the radiation pattern (think "splatter" pattern) of each of the antennae. The short ones have a pattern like a holey donut cut in half (figure of 8) whereas the long antennae are more like that donut after you have sat on it (more disc shaped). If you compare the shapes and take the logical approach that there is the same area of radiation in both patterns you realise that the long antenna will be a lot wider in diameter (hwy), but the short antenna will have better transmission off the horizontal centerline (hills). (Two wide very flat ellipse vs a big "00")

Not discrediting any of the above comments about power and earths (especially earthing the base of the antenna) as they could also be the problem.

Has one of your mates got a mike (same radio as you??) you could swap for a trip to see if it is the problem?

Don't go spending money until you have at least tried to check the easy stuff.

yeah i been told the white aireals arnt as good as the wire ones, but im up in weipa and theres no hills, plus also i didnt get the big long one, i got the real fat one thats short.

by earthing between aireal and base (bull bar). will the paint disturb it abit?

More important that the coax has good connections to the antenna base. It would be a good idea to help things along by making a good connection between the base and the bullbar by scraping down to the metal where the base touches the b/bar.

Also run you radio power direct from the battery and away from other wiring.
