Isuzu 4 BD1 rebuild

Hi there,
I have an Isuzu 4BD1 in a 1968 Series IIB Forward control that appears to have seized. A hose clip came off the back of the vacuum pump, sending oil everywhere but where it should have been. What I would like to know is has anyone had experience re-building this motor? I am getting wildly different estimates as to what it will cost. Basically, how much should I allow for labour? I can get a rebuild kit for $1,200, not sure if the head needs machining and I will remove and replace engine myself.

Fair bit of labour involved, but probably should get it done for under 4k (including parts) if you pull the motor and ancillaries and reinstall. Just ring all the reputable truck engine reconditioners in your area and ask them to quote.

It might not need a full rebuild, depending on how much damage was done. How many km did it have.

We've had the motor for 8 years, been through several land rover speedo's, but I would say around 100,000Km all up. I will post some pic's as soon as I learn how to!
I will try to take the motor out (it weighs 320KG!) but I don't have the skills or tools to re-build it myself. I need someone I can trust to honestly tell me what needs doing, what doesn't ,and how long they will need to spend on it.

Looks Great - shame about the engine. What gearbox/t-case and axles are you running?

The gearbox is a Nissan 5 speed from a cab-star light truck. It uses a Mark's Adaptors kit to connect to a series 2 LR transfer case. The axles are ENV, with a Maxi-drive diff lock in the rear, with Mal Storey axles.
The bummer is that it's taken almost 2 years to get her back to a road registered state, and now this! We owned her when she (they are all she's aren't they?) was a campervan, and used it to travel Oz for 7 years. Sold it, found it derelict, re-bought it and stripped the body off to put the tray on so it would be a more useable every day vehicle.
It was a huge battle to get it registered, because such a thing does not exist! If Forward Control Land Rover is not in the computer, then there must be no such thing!
So just when I thought all the hard work was over, it's back to the shed!
