2.8 GU gear box

Post by SHANE055 »

I was wondering if anyone knows if I can take a lower ratioed set of gears out of another Patrol gearbox and replace the ones in the box of my 2.8TD Patrol instead of changing the diff ratios

they use the same transfer case gears as the others, so rockhopper and gearmaster transfer gear sets will fit. This is low range only though.

2.8 should already have 4.625 ratio diff.

I want to run a lower ratio in all gears all the time because I've been told the 2.8 won't like larger tyres I know I can go to a 4.88 in the diffs but I'm just trying to see if theres an easier/cheaper way so I still have the options of diff gears or transfer gears to reduce it further later

I honestly dont think ripping a box apart and praying you get a decent set of ratios would be cheaper than going 4.8's. specially if you get it wrong and have to do it 3 times.

YMMV.

the 2.8 has shorter gearing than the RB30 box which interchanges but wont help. aftermarket gears are around $4800.00 plus fitting, i would go the diffs.
