Hey wicked sorry to let you down but Linc wasn't the one who started me thinking about this swap.I keep blowing centres.I've got cv's made by australian cv's in slacks creek and they seem to be strong enough but the centres aren't.

I did a re-power of a 2.8 gq with a 4.2 last weekend and swapped the centres as they are a different ratio.Same day i did the diffs i put a new centre in my 80 and it was half the size of the gq one.

I will look for the 80ute posts but i cant see how they get a gu centre into an 80 housing.It's just too big to fit

I think you might put it down to how people drive having a lot to do with it ...
you hear people blowing shit "constantly" without changing driving styles, and others never blow the same gear up.

My driving style is HARD!!!

I get up hills and ledges that other guys cant because i drive the thing farkin hard and thats why i break the centres.I crawl when it works but drive it hard when crawling doesn't work so bottom line is that i need a bigger diff.

G'Day,

Speak to 2 de extreme up your way. they fitted GU diffs to an 80 series that I bought.

Johny trackabout would be a good contact as wel as his Toyota comp trucks have been fitted with GU front diffs.

JOHNZ on here also had a GU centre grafted into a Toyo housing.

This is the best option IMHO as you can still run strong axels and CVs from places like Longfields.

sorry to hi-jack ur thread but how much are a set of cv's made from australia cv's? would they be cheaper and better then cal's cv's?

and i would try and put the gu centre into the 80series if its possible, as longfield cv's have a warranty cals DONT :twisted:

Seen my mate shane do a gu centre into an 80's diff so yes it is possible ,then use longfields because even though gu cv's are stronger than 80 series cv's longfields are stonger again.

A couple of mates and I put a dana 60 under the front of my 75ser .Would think 80 would be easer being a bit wider. I wanted the axle to bumpstop as close to the chassis as it could and found on the 75 the centre(of a gu) was clashing with the chassis heaps too early.You would have to run a really high running hight and bumpstoped suspension.Out of curiosity how does your rear seem to hold up had any major probs?I`ve had a few but I`m hoping I`ve got to the bottom of it now.Cheers Billy

I've had to re-race the rear after the pinion bearings collapsed but that is something that can happen to any brand.Also I've sheared the axle studs once but that is something I'm happy to live with because it is a cheap fix.I'd rather have the weak point be a cheap fix than break axles.As soon as you strengthen one thing something else further down the line breaks so i try to keep my weak points easy and cheap to repair

Yep same with studs I put 10mm collets in worked a treat.Was having trouble with short axles with the lack of twist or so i thaught,had a locker playing up so not real sure.Got some chromolly axels to have a go with hoping to have a bit better run.I know what you are saying about a easy break point,still pisses ya when it happens though.I`m just not sure that a normal nissan rear diff is that much stronger than a cruiser rear to go through the bs of changing things again.sorry to grt off track. Dale at 2dextreme was doing radius arms that were 80s to gu/gq, so made the conversion a bolt in.

I have a GQ front diff, disc to disc under my 80.

few mods, nothing major and it fits nicely. Been great - blew a couple of CV's in it lately (not locked either!) so i must be having fun!

Biggest drama is getting a panhard to suit... rest is straightforward.

Will be doing a GU soon enough! although Cals, bigger brakes always an option... 4.1's match the 80 rear nicely no wind up.

I'm just leading into this now and waiting on delivery of some parts to run a GQHP into a LC60 axle which has the big housing already. I've just heard back from ARB and it looks like you dont need to machine Toyota sides into a Patrol locker anymore to make Toyota axles fit. It seems now you can fit a regular RD136 airlocker and the new unified sizing means that you can just drop in the Toyota sides (ARB # 728H111) and it will work. Very nice! If it works well then I'll HP the rear also.

The other bonus..... is that I now don't have to talk to JacMac Diffs. :D

so let me get this right, the 'target' is the strength of a GQ/GU out of an 80 series front end? and ATM all you are blowing is an occasional R&P?
Well get LOCKTUP4x4 to get you a set of Longfield chryo treated gears, then get then installed PROPERLY (with the correct side gear adjustment and a solid spacer). This will make the center almost exactly as strong as a stock GQ/GU. Then put a set of Longfield cv's, axles and drive flanges on it. install them with grd12 shcs and tie wire in sets of 3. This front end will easily be 30-50% stronger than a GQ/GU with chromos.

why re-invent the wheel?

yep, ARB - toyota lux 8" side gears are interchangeable with nissan h233 side gears. funny that!

So I could fit an 8" lux centre to my gu axlss for extra strength and shave more off the diff for added clearance?
