Hilux Locking Hubs

Post by AHF01U »

Just replaced wheel bearings and stuff and had to take the locking hubs off to do so.
Went to see if it was all good off road and now the dial on the hubs won't rotate all the way to 'lock' position and it's farkin stiff. Still, 4wd works. WTF have i done?
Do i just have to pull them off again and rotate them?

Thanks,
Andrew.

You have reassembled them wrong.
When locking hubs are disassembled wrong, they will almost always LOCK but will NOT UNLOCK.

When reassembling, both the Control handle and Clutch (the locking gear) MUST be in the 'FREE' (unlock) position.

My bet is that this is not the only problem. Likely even after you do this, you will be able to set the control handle to 'free' but it will not actually disengage the Clutch gear.
If it does this then you have incorrectly installed the 'Clutch', 'Tension spring', and 'Pawl'

Luke.
PS. Multi-Purpose grease should be applied generously to everything =)

I found if you pack too much grease in the hubs, it will cause problems also..

have a look at the silver body of the hub and you will notice that the slots are different one has a larger cutout for the spring retainer to slide into
did you notice if the end cap went all the way home or sat up a couple of mm if so that is the problem realign it and it should go together sweet
