Hilux 3Y upgrade

Hilux 3Y upgrade
Dad has a 85 hilux YN65 with a 3Y. It has 33's, 2" cab and spring lift and a bull bar. The 3Y has had it so we are looking at upgrading to something with more power . He doesn't want a V6 or V8 so we are looking at a 2.7 3RZ as it is a common conversion. How much of a performance increase will this give? Will the diff ratios be OK ? Will it bolt up to the standard gearbox without an adapter?
So far we think we need:
Motor + wiring
Different radiator ?
Fuel pump changed
Engine mounts moved
Different fuel tank or pump. Is there a larger aftermarket tank that will fit and have the correct fuel pump?
Exhaust system modified. What size pipe?
Are there any more problems/anything else we should know before starting?
Thanks for any help

i know for fuel system if you use a V6 4runner tank, you wont need fuel pumps as the V6 4runner tank has an intank high pressure pump.
other wise it will take a low pressure pump, feeding into a surge tank and then a high pressure fuel pump, holden v8 external pump works and then this feeds into the motor.
but after having sorted fuel systems before, i would suggest using the 4runner tank.

you will need a 2wd 3rz bellhousing to bolt it upto the g52box.
I would recomend using a tank that already has a hi pressure pump in it, alot less mucking round, lot less to problem solve if u have fuel probs in the bush.
The radiator should be fine, just get a decent temp gauge n keep an eye on it, i used a 3y radiator on mine n it was fine.
i run extractors and a 2" system with 2 mufflers, prob restrictive but i like my cars whisper quite.

gear box will be ok just get the belhousing from a 2wd
diffs will be ok
radiator see how it goes if it is in good nick try it see if it is up to the task
Fuel pump use as suggested 4 runner or even 2wd efi (yours is single cab right?)basically any hilux efi tank in the older luxes or runners you need the whole tank as it has a plastic surge tank built into the bottom
you can waste time and money on 2 pumps and surge if you want but will give you nothing but more noise and less reliability due to heat and foreign object damage factory intank is by far a better option
exhaust 2 1/4 or 2 inch mandel if you want it quiet

To fit the original fuel tank from the donner 3rz car you will have to move the round bar that joins the two chasis rails back to fit the tank. It has the brackets for the fuel tank on it.
Cut it off bolt up the tank and weld it back on where it lines up. Piece of piss.

It is an extra cab. I don't think the tank location is different from a single cab.
What year 4runner should the tank be from? How many litres is it?
Also what year should the motor and bell housing be from? hilux or parado?
Thanks for the help

We just cut the mounting bracket off the round bar and made a new mounting braket out of angle line. this saved us cutting the round bar off. it was in a 22r-3rz couold be different.Willy Hilux wrote:To fit the original fuel tank from the donner 3rz car you will have to move the round bar that joins the two chasis rails back to fit the tank. Started compiling this:Sam T wrote:Would somebody be able to post a list of the parts we will need? Mainly the year, 2WD or 4WD and manual or auto for the motor, bell housing, and sump. Do we need a surge tank if we choose to change the pump in the fuel tank and what pump would work?
Thanks for all the help

Am doing the conversion shortly myself.
Manual is the only one I know about, 2wd bellhousing is fine and easier to get, sump is fine, 3RZ tank fits but either needs brackets made on the rear of the tank to bolt into position or the mount bar moved back (wont need surge tank then), need 3RZ clutch slave and fork to work properly as well.
Everything else is pretty much really straight forward.
When I do mine I will attempt to do a step by step guide with pics.
If its not upside down and on fire, I'm not trying hard enough.......
