Full Hydro steer on a mog 404 diff Qs

Post by ausyota »

I have some 404 diffs to go under my Hilux and I am looking at fitting a double ended hydro ram for the steering hooked up to high steer arms.
I am a complete noob when it comes to full hydro.
The ram I am looking at getting is a Dobbin Engineering unit.
Is ram stroke lenth anything I will have to worry about?
The ram is just the standard one that Dobbin sell I think.
The guy I might be buying the gear off (second hand but unused) is selling a orbital valve also and says he thinks it is about 2.5 turns lock to lock will that be OK or would 3.5 turns be better? I dont plan on doing to much high speed stuff but when I do I dont want the steering to be to touchy.
Cheers
Paul

What you need to look at in regards to the orbital valve is cc/rotation. 3.5 turns lock to lock with the cylinder he was running maybe 2 turns or 5 turns with the cylinder you are going to use.
Get the cc per rotation of the valve and work out the displacement your cylinder needs, then you can work out lock-lock.
You need at least a 9" throw cylinder with the 404s to get you towards the 45° mark with a decent leverage ratio.

OK the person selling the gear has come back to me with the stroke of the ram as being 5" on each side.
Does this mean it has a 5" stroke or 10" ?
Im trying to get my head around the whole double ended ram stroke thing.
Because as one end is coming in the other is going out so wouldnt that make it only 5" stroke? That doesnt seem right.

5" of stroke each side of centre would equal 10" total.

Number of turns lock to lock, will depend on the cc/rev of the orbital and the swept volume of the cylinder used.
