L76 into MK chassis
As stated above I am planning to stick the L76 6lt and 4L65E auto that I have had in the shed in the crate for over a year into the MK based Hummer replica.
just a couple of questions for anyone in the know.
I have not bought the power steering, alt or aircon compressor yet, would any of these fowl on the chassis ?? if so, is there other brackets available, like US based L76 appications. remembering that my engine bay is completly different to the MK, I have heaps of room around the engine, so the motor can come forward if anything needs to clear engine to chassis mounts. Now to the sump, would I have to replace it, or could it be modified?? I modified the Ecotec V6 sump by cutting the drivers side "wing" on a 45 degree angle to clear the front diff on compression.
Now to wiring, I have been talking to a place that offers the following:
"We offer a couple of packages:
1/. DIY Wiring Harness Package - includes Holden Factory Engine Harness, components to DIY to Body Harness, including instructions.
We can offer this complete as a total DIY package with Engine Control Module, Transmission Control Module, Full Calibration for both for YOUR conversion, Fly By Wire Pedal, O2 Sensors, Mass Air Flow Sensor, for $2150 + GST.
2/. Complete Custom Built Harness.
We offer this complete with Engine Control Module, Transmission Control Module, Full Calibration for both for YOUR conversion, Fly By Wire Pedal, O2 Sensors, Mass Air Flow Sensor, for $2680 + GST.
this sounds like good value, The same stuff direct from Holden was quoted to me for $3662, which requires considerable rework to get to a "plug and play" configuration for a conversion.
and I would still have to get the Correct Base Calibration/Tune for the Engine Control Module and Transmission Control Module to Disable the VATS Anti Theft System, Re-tune the diagnostic system to work in the conversion, calibrate the speedo system to correct diff ratio and tyre size.
So it sounds like a good deal, just wondering what other people have used??
Any advice would be great
Cheers

That will still cost, need to buy a cable throttle body, then pull the motor apart to change the cam and crank reluctors to suit a Ls1 ECU cause the E38 CEU cant operate cable throttle, then I still need the Trans computer and loommatto wrote:you could run a cable throttle body, get a mafless tune and get killa to send you a harness for alot cheaper than that.

I am wondering which way to go with mine too.
I have an L98 going in my Lux.
I was thinking of going with a progamable aftermarket setup with no MAF just a MAP sensor.
Something like a Wolf EMS setup. Anyone got any sugestions on this?
I was going to go cable throttle body as I dont like fly by wire much.
Not sure what auto to use either I was thinking a TH700 to minimise electronics.

i dont know but your telling me that the boffins out there have not made a computer program that will let the 6lt run on just the throtle body position and the o2 sensors if not the ls1 is the better motor because you can do anything o them?
nissan 98 gu 5" lift 37 creepys, 80%reduction gears, front locker and a gen3 and no money.
Im sure there is a computer out there to run the 6lt with a manual throttle body, thats why Im asking what people have used. I have been told the Ls1 computer wont run the L76 cause the cam and crank reluctors are different and the 6lt computer wont run a manual throttle body. So if anyone has some computer and loom options for me so I can run a L76 ( manual or electric throttle body) and a 4L65E auto that is easier and cheaper than the option I have quoted in the first post then let me know. The threadPGS 4WD wrote:Can't use LS1 computer must use E30 due to different crank/cam reluctor setup. Can't (to my knowledge) use a cable with the E38 ecu, may be possible but would depend if there is a model using that ecu and operating system that has a cable to use as a tune start point, would require modified operating system and retuning if possible. Can use LS1 ecu if change reluctor on crank and cam gear. Will also need to change injector plugs on loom.
I use EFI Live and regularly check Holden Crazy which is the tune file repository and have not seen a cable tune for the E38, there maybe a US model, sometimes the trucks ran cables later than the cars, perhaps an LQ9 operating system if one exists less fly by wire and retuned to suit.

Hey,
It is not possible to run the L76 with its original PCM and cable throttle. If you really don't want drive by wire there is 3 options.
1: Run the LS1 PCM, Custom modify the LS1 loom to match the L76 injectors, sensors, etc. Pull the crank out and change the reluctor wheel to suit LS1 PCM.
2. Run the LS1 PCM, Custom modify the LS1 loom to match the L76 injectors, sensors, etc. There is now available a electronic module that converts the L76 58X signal to the LS1 24X signal. Therefore you do not need to pull apart the engine.
3. Aftermarket ECU. I feel this is a bad option, and would not do it. well with the auto its not possible anyway. But you would end up with an engine that is hard to start, idle is crap, uses more fuel etc. There is something to be said about the 1000 odd hrs GM spend tuning there engine management.
I feel it will end up cheaper going the LS1 PCM / cable throttle route because you only need 1 PCM, not a seperate transmission module aswell. PCM is cheaper as well.
If you want i can put together some prices for you to go the LS1 PCM route. If it was my truck this is what i would do.
Also for your question about clearances, You will have issues with the alt and A/c pump if you use commodore mounts. Check out this guys website. he does brackets to mount the Alt and a sanden a/c comp up high on the engine. www.kwikperf.com He is in the US but ships to Aus.

option 2 sounds good. Can you pm me some prices. I did not realise the ls1 pcm controlled the auto too. Would it control the vz auto? I have been told they have a different broadcast code to the earlier vt vx and vy autos. Cheers hoppy

I would be keen for a price too, including ECU, loom and signal convertor module.
Not sure what auto I will be running though.
I definatly want to go a cable throttle. Were the LS1s cable? Do they bolt straight up?

I have done a LS1 and 4l65e combination before with no worries. Not sure what they mean by broadcast code, but basically the gearbox is just sensors and solonoids.
The LS1 throttle body was cable, but does not bolt straight up, because the 6L motors have a bigger throttle body. There are numerous different ones available on ebay.

Ok guys, to go the cable throttle body route does work out more expensice then going drive by wire. All up including PCM, harness, reluctor module, Injector adapters, new knock sensors and harness, and modified to suit will be looking at around the $2494 mark, Depending on what i can buy PCM and harness for at the time.
On top of this you need to purchase a cable throttle body with sensors.
But if you really don't want drive by wire, this is a good option, and still cheaper than an aftermarket ECU.

On the top of the gear box there is a sticker with a broadcast code something like 6HBD, 6HZD etc. not sure what it means, killalux wrote:I have done a LS1 and 4l65e combination before with no worries.
