Camshaft Movement

Post by crispy »

Have finally tracked down a problem i've been having with my sierra lately.
It first had mass distributor problems, with excessive shaft movement, no advance and finally missing teeth.

I got a good s/h distributor and put it in and it made a strange noise and took bit of a chunk out off one of the teeth of the cog. The cog on the cam is fine tho.

There is quite a lot of movement back and forth in the camshaft maybe 5-10mm.
I can't really seem to find what holds the cam in, had bit of a look in the service manual but hasn't helped much.

Any ideas of what has caused this and the solution?

Maybe a worn cam and/or bearing surfaces. You need to pull it apart and have a look

Had a similar problem latley turned out to be a flogged out cam sprocket.

Could also be the cam belt!
Might be time to get the lj back!

Yeah i'll hopefully pull it apart this weekend, i feared with the amount of movement it has, it won't be a simple fix.

Would love to get the LJ back, should of never sold it

Camshaft thrust bearing worn? Or the cam itself may be worn where it runs on the thrust bearing.
