re fj45 disc front swap
hi guys decided to do disc brake front swap on 73 fj45 ute and pulled disc front out 82 model bolted all up ok now im up ####creek as the front tailshaft bolts dont line up so tried swapping uni joint and 82 part and they have diff uni sizes and otha shaft too long please help
i think you can get away with sliding the front half of the new tailshaft into the rear half of the old shaft.
Not sure how this will go for balance, just try it and see.
The other option is to turn the tailshaft 90 degrees, and redrill the holes in the pinion flange of the diff.

thats the third optionpcman wrote:swap the pinion flanges
will need a new seal, get one from an early diff as the seal is to suit the companion flange.
I personally think this is the hardest option though as you have to deal with re-torqueing the nut, replace a seal, etc.

re pinion seal
do you have a link to ebay pinion flanges and also would i need a puller to remove pinion
Re: re pinion seal
I did it recently and the companion flange pulled out very easilyfj45304 wrote:do you have a link to ebay pinion flanges and also would i need a puller to remove pinion
Does your new diff have the circular pinion flange? If so, your easiest option would be to rotate the flange 90 degrees, and re-drill the bolt holes.
There is a step on the end of the driveshaft which locates the shaft centred on the flange, all the bolts do is hold it there.
I would only be pulling the companion flange if you absolutely have to.

pinion flange
wat do you mean by circular pinon flange
Re: pinion flange
The older style pinion flange was rectangular with the 4 bolt holes on the corners of the flangefj45304 wrote:wat do you mean by circular pinon flange
The newer flange is just a circle with the holes drilled in it.
ie, those pinion flanges on ebay are circular. They have the old holes drilled in them, then rotate the flange 90degrees, and they have the new holes drilled aswell.
