will a gu 2.8 intercooler fit onto a gq 2.8 with not too much trouble?
You will have to support the weight of the intercooler also. On the GU's they use a tubular frame running from the firewall to the radiator support panel for the intercooler to mount on. It's pretty intricate but it works well, I don't know if you can retro fit the same frame to suit the GQ.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages
Front Mount
Advantages: you can use an IC as large as the front of your car giving you the ability to cool alot more air. Cooler air at the front of the car meaning your getting alot more fresh air to the IC
Disadvantages: The mount of piping you need to run from Turbo to IC and then IC back to turbo means you get more lag then a Top Mount. Front Mount blocks the radiator more, and puts more heat into the engine bay, if your engine runs a little warm as standard, it will run bit hotter as there is more air restriction and hot air being forced into radiator
Top Mount
Advantage: Less pipe work between Turbo to IC and back to Manifold, reduces turbo lag. Top mounts keep the turbo away from the radiator and help keep the engine cooler. Bonnet scoop helps keep the IC cool with air
Disadvantages: Smaller IC, you can't cool as much air with a top mount as you can with an Front Mount, so high boost engines won't cool as well. If you have a high mount Turbo your bit hard pressed to install a top mount as there is little to no room to do it
