I still have the standard 4.1's and got it tuned by dieseltec and its fine on road but low range is none existant will defineutly need crawler gears. im my opinion 4.6's will be make it rev to hard on the highway. 4.3's would be a good compromise I think.

4.625 ratios will bring it back to near std with 35's on. I have done this myself.

4.6's will be too much, you car being a series 1 4.2TD will have 3.9 gear sets, up two tyre sizes, down two gear sizes, so up to 35" tyres, drop your gears to 4.3:1's

I run 37" tyres on my series 1 4.2TD, with 4.6's, and its sitting with very close to the factory standard gearing now

I had 4.3 in my TD42T wagon and they were spot on.
Speedo was within 1 Kph on the GPS.
Thank god i didnt go with 4.6 as most poeple surggested, my truck would of been over geared on the hwy & revin its arse off.
Maybe 4.6 from 3.9s are ok is you have a comp truck or a weekend warrior only.
I run was Runing 35 claws.

let me clear some of this up for you ...i have a 4.2td and run both 35's and 37's with 4.6 ratio's and the difference is 150rpm between the two tyre sizes at 110k/hr .
Heres what a GU will do at 110k's

stock standard 2550rpm

35's-4.6ratio's 2550rpm

37's-4.6ratio's 2400rpm

and i still tow a 1.5 ton boat no worrys (motor tweeked a bit)
off road "size DOES matter"

The 2000 series 1 cab chassis should have the 4.11's standard.
4.6's will bring back to standard your ratio's with 35's
Run a 3" exhaust, adjust fuel and boost and run the 4.3's.
This is what I have done and happy with these ratio's.
The 4.3 centres are cheap and easy to obtain.
Obtain a shim from Hobbsy and tighten the LSD while it is out.

Patrols run roughly the same gearbox ratio's. All TD42 gearbox ratio are the same, All TD42T ratio are the same ect.

Ute and wagon run the same gearbox, earlier models ran same diff ratio also, say saying if you had 3.9 go 4.3 or 4.11 go 4.6 is not exactly correct.

A gear ratio is the same no matter if its in a wagon or ute, nissan fitted higher gearing to the wagons because they usually see less weight and wanted taller gearing for better ecconomy.

For reference
1:1 is high ie; direct drive, no reduction, tall, hence over geared.
1:10 is low ie: reduction of 10, hence under geared.

For 35" I would get a good tune done, 3 complete inch exhaust and no diff gears. If you thing your low range is too high fit crawler gears, 43% is more then enough for 35's.

4.3 will be perfect for you.
I had a similar setup, 3 inch exaust, pump mod, and 16 pound boost and i was rapped with the performance and gearing on 4.3s

4.6s are too much for 35s on a GU. I had 4.6's in my 4.2td wagon and now have 4.3s and find it far better. I find the driveabilty with the 4.3s is alot better than the 4.6's.

When you run 4.6's your speedo reads 10km fast at least. so its not the same as standard. I compared the wagon before and after. speedo was spot on originally but was out after the 4.6s

simply work it out this way

Look as what gears you have currantly.

If you go up 1 tyre size then change up 1 diff ratio size, if you go up 2 tyre sizes go up 2 diff ratio sizes

So if its 3.9:1 and your running 35's when the standard tyres were close to 31's then 4.375:1 (GU 3Ltr TD's have them in the auto's and manual's i think) or if it was 4.11:1 and you went 35's when standard tyres were 31's then 4.625:1

Lets hope you have 3.9:1's cause 4.625:1's are rare and cost your left nut to buy as everyone wants them

I am just gunna go 4.375:1's on my setup even though i do have 35's and currently have 4.11:1's but i will use some 85% reduction gears to fix that

go 4.625 if your running 35s mate i run 37s with 4.625 and its shit at 110 its sits on 2100rpm on the free way which is rubbish if you want to power up a hill i want to get rid of my 4.6 and go 4.88 which would be a better option

i can hold 5th on most small hills and for bigger hills have to go back to 4th with 37's and 4.1 diff gears in my GU ute which only has a basic tune and 3 inch exhaust.
You find with 4.6s and 35's you are right out of the torque curve of the motor in a 4.2td. no point revving the guts out of it if its not making power ;)

My gu ute runs a 3 inch exhaust with 12 pound boost and tune , with 4.3 gears and 35's and is very driveable round town and on the highway , returns good economy too .
My speedo is out by 1 klm at 100klm/h .

I can't believe this thread!!! It's pretty simple really, as Jet 6 i think said above.... you need to check what you already have first.

Most GU utes will have 4.1's std and most GU 4.2L wagons 3.9's. You can check this on your compliance plate XXXXXX41HG or 39HG something like that anyway.

Once you have done that, for 35's go two ratios up. Crude method i know but also as said above it works for GU Patrols (to within 1 or 2 km/h) anyway. So... for utes with 4.1's std - go 4.6's for close to std gearing on 35's and for wagons with 3.9's std - go 4.3's for close to std gearing on 35's. Again for 37's, since it's another tyre size up from std - go another ratio up.... 4.88's and 4.6's respectively.

This could be a different story for drivability however, with many people above using 4.3's on the utes with power ups etc that's personal preference. I've got 4.3's from std 3.9's in a wagon with power ups and find it good to daily drive and good in low range and towing is fine too. But it personal preference...

Hope that helps

I have a GQ on 35s with 4.11 diff gears and i was informed by a guy in the comp scene to put 4.88 diff gears in

Is that too much just for 35s

actually, the laughs on you mate,

because a ratio change is about on par with an increase in tyre size from say on a 3.9 quipped vehicle:

33's you will need 4.1's to bring gearing and speedo back to stock,
35's and you will need 4.3's
37's and you will need 4.6's.
