Rear seats fj40

Post by bek and dave »

I was wondering if you can fit a 3 seater in the rear of a 1976 fj40, and if so what seat fits?
I was wanting to have a single and bench seat in the front (check my wanted ad) and a 3 seater in the rear, is it possible???

Thanks Bek

maybe for 1 normal person and 2 amputees.

There are seats that run down the sides that face inward like the troopies. My bj40 has a blue plate for 7! Mind you, all the complaining from the back got all back seats removed quick smart.

Seriously, for a forward facing seat, would you seat 3 of yourself across the back? I know i wouldnt impose that on anyone.

G`day,

I put bucket seats in the front and a pajero dickie seat in the back of my 77 FJ40....

A simple answer to having a three seater in the back is .... NO.

The only people that could fit three in the back would have to be very small people. two adults can fit but even then it`s a tight squeeze..also putting in the correct seat belts, ie over the shoulder inertia belts can only be done if you have a roll bar in the back. But as the early models didnt come with seat belts in the back, lap belts work, but personaly I dont like lap belts. A persons whole upper body gets thrown around too much for my liking....
If you are going to put one in... make sure all the mounting points are strong enough so you could hang the 40 up by it. high tensile bolts all round. I bolted in 4 places on the floor and 2 on the inner wheel arches. all had 60mm x 60mm x 6mm plates sandwiching the body. I also used 12mm high tensile bolts all round.
The engineer didnt have a problem with the mountings.

I hope this has helped you let me know how you go..

Actually it was for 3 small children. I would sit my youngest in the front with me most times but just wanted the 3 seater as an option. Most times only two of them would be in the back.

Thankyou very much for your help. I am getting a new rollbar put in as the one it came with has weld joins and isn't roadworthy. I want something good and strong as my kids will be in the truck with me.
Again thanks for your advise...

G`day Bek and Dave,

Kids in the back.... even more reason to over engineer it.
I had my rear seat facing backwards so anyone in the back was under the centre bar of the roll bar I put in. With this seating arrangement I utilized the roll bar for the rear inertia belts. But because of the duel seat belt mounts I had to get a seperate certificate just for the seat belts. (start to get to know your local engineer.hahaha) Because of the way Pajero seats work I took advantage of the fold down aspect or the seat. I then put a aluminium checker plate on the back of the seat so when it folds down I could use the area when I wanted to put things in the back. Like Fishing tackle boxes ... fishin gear... or recovery gear box when I was out..

the answer is a YES

late fj40-bj42 LX's came with a 3 seat rear ( 6 seat total)
there is a single jump seat which hinges and a standard 2 seater.

there is plenty room in the back for 3 blokes, the body of the 40 series in the rear is alot wider than the narrow bit of the forward cabin.

Rear seat facing backwards is a great idea, and I love the safety aspect. However I hope your kids don't get car sick as facing backwards would have to be gut wrenching after awhile, especially in a 40.

I reckon there is plenty of room for three, finding the right seat might be a problem. There a not many of the LX rear seats around that came standard in the 42. You might be able to use a 1 1/2 front bench seat and then a third row flip down seat from a cruiser/patrol/pajero to make three...

Where you going to fit the esky???

i have always had the seat facing rearward in my play truck's. ( soft tops)
i also wedge the LPG tank in the gap between the front and teh back seat also.
if you put a 3 seater facing rearward adults wont come in under the cage though as you woudl have to put the seat ( same as forward facing 3 seater) on the wheelarches.

people in the back ( rearward facing) always have heaps of fun. no-one has ever been sick, and we have picked up ehem, plenty of " hitchhikers" this way also..

Ricko,

No my kids never got sick... they thought it was great ... torrmenting drivers behind us with their constant waving   And the esky always worked as a foot rest... and was never left behind.. :D

My 40 is a soft top just thought you should know.

The pajero dickie seat I used was a two seater In my 40 to fit three you would have to have the seat over the top of the wheel arch..I didnt want that. cause that ment that whoever sat in the back would bang they head on the side member of the roll bar. and until now didnt know that three was possible at all

Eric I have been looking high and low for a 3 seater to fit in the back and we can't have one.
My hubby spoke to the engineer that does the tilt tray backs on hubby's tow trucks and also does the mod plates and the only way we can have a 3 seater is if they are mounted on the wheel arch and you can't have that. You can't get a mod plate for it (well not in Qld anyways). He agreed with you that having the kids facing outwards is the safest way to travel with them. He said he would have to mount supports behind the front seats incase of an accident the rear seat won't push up against our front seat, but he can do all that and mod plate it.
So now about your Pajero seat (since I am not that great with cars and models) what model am I chasing. Also what about the suzuki seats?? I managed to find a original front dual and single seat, so now I need the rear so I can send them over to the upholstery guy.

Thanks for all your help

Hey, Bek and dave,,,

Got the answer for ya early.... The model was a dickie seat out of the 1984 long wheel base 7 seater.. the seat folds down from the back. I mounted it facing backwards the ran lap belts catch from the exsisting floor mounts and high tensile bolted the sash belt into the wheel arch.

I fitted 100mm x 100mm x 6mm plates above and below sandwiching the body....it worked great!

Ok great, thankyou. I have no idea what your talking about when it comes to the bolts and plates etc LOL, but I will get hubby to talk to the engineer. I am pretty sure we will be having over the shoulder seat belts (driver, passanger and rear seats, middle front will be lap belt) which will be mounted to the rollbar ( I think) and we are definitly facing the seat outwards as you suggested and engineer agreed with.

Thanks for all your help, this is our first FJ40 and a project we are doing as a family so we have alot to learn.

Hey bek and dave I just drew up a diagram explaining what I ment about "sandwiching" you can use this method for attaching most things.[img][/img]

I hope this helps If you have any other questions about using this method P/m me and I`d be happy to let you know

hi,

you have been GROSSLY misinformed about the 3 seater over the wheen arches. the fj40 LX comes from the factory with a 3 seater in the rear that sits over the wheel arches.
these seats are FACTORY fitted to fj40's and bj42's.

Hey jess,
the three seater you are talking about.... does it run down the side ie on top of the wheel arch ... or from driver side to passenger side? ...

When I first got my 40 it had two bench seats in the back that when it was a hard top sat ontop of the guards running down the length from behind each front seat to the back barn doors.

The configuration I am talking about IS NOT THIS WAY.. The way I mean is across from side to side.

When my 40 was in it's standard set up I could seat two people in the front in bucket seats and four adults in the back but due to the addition of a roll bar and new configuration of the rear seat the back can not hold more than two in the back ...

so it all depends on whether or not the particular 40 series in question has or has not been modified.

So yes factory fitted more people could sit in the back Please understand the method that has been described IS a modification and not standard.
this was in hard top not modified soft top

the bj42 lx seats are from the left hand side wheelarch across to the right hand side wheel arch. the base of the 2 seater is fixed and the 1 seater " jump seat" can be hinged out of the way for access.
