Suspension help for lux
hello
i have a 86 Toyota hilux and i am looking into doing some suspension work. my lux already has a suspension lift but it is in dire need of new springs and shocks. im looking into starting out in comp advents and i am wondering if anyone out there knows of 1: a good brand of shocks and springs 2: a company that would be able to supply and fit (that is in Melbourne).
what i have been considering is a twin shock set-up with say the Procomp ES9000 Shocks connected to loops...would this work?

There are mutliple thread about shocks, and more specifically springs for hilux's. Id recommend the search tool, type in IFS and rears, and search in the toyota and also general tech sections for starters, you should be able to find info there and also in linked threads to answers all your questions champ.
I think there is even some info the lux bible at the top of the toyota section!
Good luck

Why do you want dual shocks?, the weight etc of a hilux doesn't really need adjustable shocks, and is just pissing money on a wall imo.
Every question has been asked 300 times in the last 2 weeks... and as above everytyhing you could dream of for just starting out on the suspension mods is in the bible..
Racerunner shocks as in air shocks/coilovers?, 4link/5link etc is needed for that and is not a simple bang up job, if it cant be done at home by mates id expect a 10k + bill, would cost 2 or 3k just for the shocks, little own the other components needed.
ifs + ruf + inverting rear shocks + shock hoops for the front, is the cheapest and easiest way to get a hilux articulatiing well, before you start moving into moving shackle/spring mounts, or the extreme of coilovers/airshocks/coils.

The main reason as to why people come home with S shaped leaves is not knowing what they are doing, a trac bar for softer leaves is needed.
Bibles from both here and pirate have more info than you could dream of.
Most trucks can be setup without being rattled into a million parts and still put through their paces, mine can and the suspension has cost me no more than $800 including shocks.
Ifs leaves = $50
ruf = free
shocks $500
front shackles $200
rear shackles $50 (2nd hand)

What are your goals, touring, moderate 4x4ing, extreme tracks etc, daily driven/weekender etc.
Budget aside the ifs rears and ruf with x over/hi-steer + some shock mounting and shock upgrades cant be beaten for the price.
If you have 2k to spend, the trailgear leaf springs are good off the shelf options, along with some shock hoops and inverting the rears youd have a capable truck thats out of the box, although some alterations are needed, 2k will get you new leaf packs front and rear , new shock mounts/inverted for the rear and a set of shocks, without messing around with leaf packs etc.

well at the moment im more for the high speed events, stuff that can handle small bumps, large bumps and cornering more than rock crawling...all i need is that all the mods that are done are road legal..i would love for these mods to not have to be redone when this truck becomes a trailer truck.... i wont be doing this work unfortunately...i do not have the time or the skill to create something that will last. im hoping that someone on here would be able to give me a list of things i should do and a company in Victoria that will be capable to do these modsberad wrote:What are your goals, touring, moderate 4x4ing, extreme tracks etc, daily driven/weekender etc.

It has everything you need, and then probably more if your into hi-speed, the less lift the better for speed or all around imo, 5inch lift being airborn and landing on a shity angle will end in tears, 3inch would be than enough.
The more arch in leaves = more lift = a worse shackle angle = no good.

I run 35x12.5 with 2 inch of lift and have no chance of hitting any part of the body.
The front stock springs will work ok with longer shocks, shocks are what is stopping articulation at the moment in your case.

all i need to do now is find a company that could fit it ...then save some money, buy, book her in and get it done. what is kinda annoying is that mine has already had a lift. i was semi hoping just to revamp. could i add you on msn?

oh ok ...well what would you suggest?bulldogy wrote:The 3" kit is all you need from locktup they fit 36x14.5 iroks on cruiser rims with very minor rub at full flex.
5" as said would be way to tall for hi speed stuff. Plus these springs are designed more for rock crawling than hi speed so i am not sure how well the would be suited to jumps etc.

The 3" should be okay just maybe ask them to get a different valving maybe to suit it for jumps?
Im not really sure about hi speed stuff thogh we have launched at speed with no damage to the 3" springs.
I think most springs are pretty much on par with the exception of the TG ones which flex twice as much out of the box and have a pretty good spring rate from memory.
At leats if you decide to go rockcrawling aswell you will have a kik ass all rounder
Maybe ask booflux he has a V8 lexus in his with the 3" TG kit

well in a way this kit would be great, it will be modded enough to handle everything i throw at it, but still allow me to explore every kind of 4wd competitions before i set it solely up for one type....back to the previous question...do you know of anyone in victoria that could fit the front and rear kit to my truck?bulldogy wrote:The 3" should be okay just maybe ask them to get a different valving maybe to suit it for jumps?

I think you will like the kit they are pretty impressive just don't run a bodylift the 3" springs are enough for the 36s as is

hey booflux just wondering if you could give me your take on 3" TG front and rears...im considering splashing out and buying this to help get towards my goal of creating a hilux comp truck but i need to know whether this system handles bumps well at high speed and also jumps

Hey mate its a great kit for flex and ride but I wouldnt be running leafs at all if you want high speed nd jumps. I dont believe the TG kit or any leaf kit is suited to that application.
