Dundubara has a group booking area. All you have do is ring the permit place. Can't remember the minimum amount of people to book the area but worth looking into if a large group was going. Nice showers and shitters there now. Bit different from years back when you had to chuck a piece of wood on the fire before you went in. $1 for 3 minute shower but I would use the disabled shower it stayed on longer and was good with the young boy to shower at the same time.

It also has wahing up sinks under lights. Water taps at most sites.

Dundubara was tops and will be going back there again.

Checked that out too & it posed 2 problems. 1. You require the "Group activity permit" before you can book that area  2. According to the EPA you cant park your car with your site, so you will be camped 50ish Meters from the car. That would suck for grabbing stuff from the fridge.

Just got back from fraser this long weekend. Stayed at dundabura at the tent site just opposite the entrance to the group site. No groups were there that weekend and it was real quiet. Perfect spot where we were and really close to amenities. 2 minute walk if that. Had the fire ring to our selves. Easy driving everywhere. Got our permits on line about a week before we went. Not a lot of tourists there this time. Would highly recommend that camp site. Saw no dingo s. Dazza.

I am heading up next weekend & am trying to go up to the cape ?. Did you go that far up & if so was Ngarla rocks bypass open as all the websites state it is closed due to erosion.

There is no bypass track to close.

Basically about halfway along has completely dissapeared and your left with a shear drop off that goes straight into the water.

I did see the photo's, But thought some one may have made a track around by now. I have thought that the rangers would have to have access up there as the Lighthaus is manned ??. We will still be going to at least the Bypass so ill take some Pics & post when i get back.

Lighthouse is not manned, hasn't been for years. There was a bypass for the bypass years ago, which I think was the original bypass, if that makes sense. I don't know if its open/open to the public. May be a locked gate these days. You can get to the cape by the western beach and some inland roads but it is closed and the beach is very unpredictable. Definitely not a 1 car trip. I've seen motorbikes bogged there and had to be pulled apart to get 'em out and above the tide..

These ones couldn't get close enough!
They weren't threatening at all, if we so much as growled at them they would scamper away...

Aparently they're getting a little more forward

All of my trips to Fraser were with a largish group of people, maybe that was the difference ?

Either way don't leave food out and keep an eye on baby Azaria and all should be good

no access from nagala rocks north by eastern beach, which stops going to the cape pretty much. i leave sunday to camp at ocean lake for 2 weeks.

this is not the week to be camping at fraser if your not fishing the classic
because the island will be very busy as alot of people (including me) go up the week early.

Also main beach is a 3 hour trip at the moment slower if behind a boat, because of alot of exposed coffee rock but every day there is more and more sand being pushed back onto the beach by the tides,

Lighthouse is manned by volunteer's doing EPA projects.. have chatted with them in past years when I've camped up there. Normally monitoring the turtle breeding.

Westen beach is closed to all vehicles north of wathumba. I'm sure there was an inland trail.. but it's not used anymore .. even the volunteers use the beach .. I've had to spot them down from the cape to orchid on the odd occasion.

On the resorts website it says something about permits, but you can get them frmo the reception at the resort.. does this sound right?
If you want to do the resort thing, then Eurong would be a better option in my opinion, Kingfisher is a long way from most things. Camping at Central station is great, as with any campground on the Island. But to get the real Fraser Island feel you can't go past camping on the beach! We camped in Cathedral beach resorts camping grounds this year and was great also.
If you take a vehicle on to the Island, you need a permit.
If you stay in a resort or private camping ground/property you don't need camping permits.
Permits should be available from reception or any booking office in Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach.

I agree. My one and only trip to Fraser was with the Qld Mitsu club, camped just off the beach a few km north of Eurong. We stayed for a week after the club left, and the best memory of that trip was wandering onto the deserted beach with a coffee first thing each morning.

You won't get the same experience in Kingfisher.

How do you go about food for such a long time up there? Is there a butcher/veg to buy from or did you have enough to last 1-2 weeks?

cheers

We had a meal plan which used fresh stuff early in the trip, relying less on perishables towards the end of the trip. From memory, it was 10 or 11 days all up. Even with the crappy fridge we had back then, it wasn't too difficult.

As it turned out, the general store in Eurong had a reasonable range of basics, and we were also left a wad of bacon by one of the other members of the group - so we ended up having bacon for breakfast every morning.

You can get just about anything you want on the Island. If you want to get real fussy Woolies in Hervey Bay is only a fast cat ride from Kingfisher away.
Also, I find the shop up at Orchid Beach the cheapest place for fuel most of the time.

yea that orchid servo is pretty good, we cryo-vac our meat in meal portions and keep in a ice slurry little costly in ice but it keeps very well, we also do the frozen veg packs but we go pretty basic.

ive done both camping and staying in a house on the island and much prefer camping, warm showers are nice this time of year tho. :)

i was suprised with the amount of things available on fraser.
theres a bakery and a pizza shop at eurong. plus a general store that carries abit of stuff.

plus the other service centres.

and if you have decent ice chests a week up there food wise was no dramas.
