GQ vs GU

gday lads

just interested if anyone out their who made the move to the GU from the GQ was happy (thinkin of the money difference).

will be in the market soon to spend a bit of money on my next pootrol, tossing up between a 4.2 diesel GQ or 4.5 petrol GU and some money left over for a camper, or go the 4.2 turbo diesel GU and no camper.

need some help deciding, vehicle will be everyday car, will be running 3" flexi coils and about 35-37" tyres offroad.

main thing is for it to be capable and reliable. budget of about $20000

any input would be great.

the GU and GQ are mechanically identical (except for the CV,s). So comfort is the same depending on what type of springs you go for. My wife has GU 4.2 turbo diesel and i have GQ 4.2 petrol on gas. Engine wise the 4.2 turbo diesel is alot better on juice when towing. Personal choice bro.........

At the risk of stating the obvious, for $20k, you could build a hell of a GQ, and marginally less cool GU.

These days $12k will buy a GREAT GQ, and still be able to afford the camper.

Again, obviously, the GQ looks a bit dated, but who cares?

Good, capable GQ + camper = :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

plus if you want to use a camper diesel is the go.. petrol will suck to much juice..

thanks guys, GQ its gonna be.

have never owned a diesel before, plenty of petrol ones.

anything i should look for, was any of the 4.2 models beter than others.
and should I spend the extra and go turbo

4.2 is a great engine provided its been looked after.. get it running and either take the dip stick out or pop the engine oil cap off.. if no smoke comes out its ok if its pooring smoke big chance of rings being rooted.. failing that

GET A PRE PURCHACE INSPECTION! dont do it the hard way like i did..

bang for buck gq is a far better option.

find a good one (td4.2 diesel) with lowish kms and spend a couple grand on a GOOD turbo system and u will have urself everybit of a gu, minus a few yuppie features and a better looking truck (hehe).

then stil have a few grand to spend on hookers...

I agree with pretty much every comment in the thread. However I would say the GU's are more comfortable and a bit nicer to be in, only because the bodies/interiors are a generation newer - less rattles, noise, better ergos etc. To me, thats not worth the current big price difference between a great GQ and an average GU.

You'll also enjoy the GQ more offroad because a scratch and dent wont matter so much.

I've got a GQ ute and drove a GU (turbo).
The GU is much more cumfortable and quieter than the GQ. It also has more leg room.
BUT!
I also would rather scratch the Q than the U.


I still want to know where I can get a 2 grand turbo

turbo 450 (gu ser2)
manifold 250 (gu)
oil lines 200 (or less)
dump 200
exhaust up to 600
tune 200
boost controller 50
=1900

could do a air to air intercooler setup with a brand new intercooler for around $500 and get a bit more hp

that is the setup on my gq and it goes every bit as good as a gu series 2 with exhaust, boost increase and tune up.

another question i have between the GQ and GU, is im planning on running a 3" lift with 36x12.5x15 simexs on cruiser offset rims, im pretty sure these will fit fine on a GU i may be wrong. I know on a GQ I will have to get the grinder out, am happy to do so. but just wondering how much i would actually have to cut out.

If anyone is running the same set up, would be good to see.

This is with about 3" of lift, 12mm radius arm spacers and 35/11.5/15 pedes. The rims are -20mm approx offset over std. (16/17's offset). Had some minor rubbing at the top of the front guards under full suspension compression.

With the 36's you will need to run drop boxes (and maybe spacers as well) to clear the front guards.

With a GQ you've got a bit of cutting/grinding to do.

thanks for that mate, dont want to run drop boxes though, want to run dropped arms with the flexi arm, and space if need be.
