My GU TB45 Turbo LiLPG Build Thread
Bought my new 98 GU Ti 4.5L Patrol two weeks ago with the intention of doing a few engine mods to suit needs a bit better. On the weekend I started pulling it apart in preparation for the turbo and LPG conversions.
For the forced induction side of things I'm going to be using a Ford XR6 Turbo(GT3540) on a MTQ low mount manifold with a 450X300X100 front mounted intercooler and for engine management an E-Manage Ultimate. So far I have moved the P/S coolers up 30 mm and mounted the intercooler, modified the front bar mounts to fit the cooler pipes, cut a 3 1/2 inch hole in the drivers side inner guard replaced the exhaust manifold studs(including 2 broken ones, that took some work) and ground about 5mm off the block to stop the compressor housing of the turbo hitting it.
For the LPG side of things I'm using ICOM JTG Liquid Injection. So far I have have drilled the inlet manifold and fitted the nozzles, mounted the injectors, processor and regulator. Still have to mount the tank, fit filler, service and fill lines, run the harness, wire in the petrol injectors and the mount switch.
Hoping to have most of this done by Friday as I'm competing in a drift comp the following weekend and need to tow the car there. Here are some pics I've taken so far.

The liquid LPG injection is something different. I don't think anyone around here has done a turbo patrol with EFI Liquid LPG.

Turbod gq- i'm hoping the rods will hold together for a few years until i can afford a gu with a tb48, but if i do blow this engine I'll probably just convert it to a tb48.

Well I managed to get it all done a couple of days short of two weeks, but it was very close to my deadline. finished it at 9.30pm Thursday 21/5/09 and left at 3.00 am the next morning on my 18 hour trip to SA. The car ran great for the trip with only a couple of minor teething problems that had to be addressed at servos.
On the performance side of things, even on 4 psi of boost it's a major improvement over standard. I ran out of time to fit the E-Manage and the mixtures were pretty good so its running on the standard ecu and timing at the moment. I'm looking forward to winding the boost up once the new ecu is in. Boost comes in around 2000 rpm but I suspect the standard actuator is having trouble holding the wastegate flap shut so i'll get a 8-10 psi actuator soon and that should improve response even more.
As for the LPG system its awesome, If there wasn't a gauge telling you, it would be impossible to tell which fuel its running on.It idles smooth, has plenty of power and the economy although terrible is the same on both fuels. At least its still cheaper to run than a diesel! The only drama's so far is the gauge isn't very accurate and it started idling rough due to a torn petrol injector o-ring causing it to "duel fuel" on number 6 cylinder but that's fixed now.
All in all I am extremely happy with the results and as with any power junkie can't wait for some more boost. To anyone who's tossing up between this and an engine conversion, you'll end up spending less money and have more driveability and power than an engine conversion with this setup. Thanks for reading.

and dyno figures! I am really interested how the emanage goes. I have tuned alot of cars with these, but never a patrol. Always wondered how they would go.

not really, it cost me somewhere between $4000 and $5000 for the turbo conversion incl the exhaust and emanage and I got the turbo for a price i'll never get again. but there would of been a week worth of labour in it that I wasn't getting paid for while I was working on the patrol, work that out at $77 an hour.AFeral wrote:Any chance of a brake down of costs for the conversion.

it's an auto and its still going great, i think the gas injector calibrators(nozzles) are a bit too small so it is a little bit lean but it isn't a drama. i'm still deciding if i want to put in some bigger petrol injectors or not.raptorthumper wrote:How does it go now and is it an Auto or Manual. the manifold was ment to be high mount, but after it arrived i thought it shouldn't be too hard to fit. i was wrong and i won't do a low mount next time! the turbo glide high mount doesn't look much easier either. i'm pleased with how the conversion looks and hope it may generate some work for my business.
p.s- how is yours going, any updates? got any plans in the near future? do you know of any 4.8 turbos in australia?
