75 Series Cruiser 2H problem

Post by Drift Technician »

So I finally registered the 75 after paying through the ass for rego (guess they have to offset Rudds stimulation with something), filled her up with a overpriced tank of diesel and took her for a drive.

14kms later I am losing power to the point where it cuts out, pull over to the side of the road and hear a sort of "exploding noise"as I come to a stop. Get out and have a look at the rear diff and its got a bit of smoke coming off it with what appears to be oil everywhere. Pop the bonnet and notice what looks like a bomb has gone off against the drivers side chassis rail and what appears to be diesel or oil all over there all towards the back of the ute.

Throw her on a horribly overpriced tow truck, after removing my wallet from my ass to prevent the tow truck driver extorting more money out of me, try to remove the vehicle off the tow truck.

No go.

She will move forward, but not backward.

I dont "think" its the engine as it still seems to turn over but not fire (doesnt help main battery carked it earlier in the day), but I've been told it might be a injector line or possibly the injector pump deciding it didnt like life and wanted to join an emo rock band and sing about the despairs of pumping diesel day in day out without any appreciation........

So whats the mechanics of Outers opinions?

First time I've actually driven the damn thing since purchase too which makes it all the sweeter........

right hand side as you look front to back, or right hand as you look from the drivers seat?

Is it oil, or is it diesel?

Have you checked to see how much oil is in the sump (if any), have you cracked off the fuel line after the hand priming unit (either before or after the filter) and checked to see if there is fuel getting through? I'd be checking the oil before cranking it over again, if it has oil, well start working on the fuel system. Did the car have good oil pressure the last time you looked.?

Some good picture might also help out, as both the oil filter is on the same side as the pump on the old 2H

If its the pump, and your sooking as much as this after filling the tank, your gonna go emo yaself when you have to pay to get a pump rebuilt...
Nice gq swb ute chop with a huffer for the good times

Yeah oil pressure was fine, was keeping a good eye on it driving it.

Sorry, right hand side drivers side I meant, looking towards front from drivers seat.

It may be diesel, I am unsure as it was late at night and was on my way out so wasn't in the type of clothes I could just start working on the truck with.

It has been towed to my usual mechanic for a look, will try to get pics this afternoon if he hasn't gotten around to looking at it.

Only reason I was complaining about the fuel was I filled from empty to full and copped it at $1.21 for diesel, 5km down the road its $1.07...........

Having replaced the pump in my daily 2LTE ($750) I know I am in for a reaming with one for the 2H, with any luck its just a line, fingers as always are crossed.

Ive blown the arse out of a oil pressure sender (hides under the edic motor on the drivers side rear of a 2H) and made a huge mess....thankfully I was idling out of a carpark and wondered why the motor cutout(low oil pressure!)
New sender and topped the oil, good as new!
Luv the sound of a diesel,
especially a Chev 6.2!
Its GONE.........Replaced by a qik HDJ105.

I blew the arse out of my oil filter, the oil pressure switch stuffed up and sent my oil pressure through the roof. Something had to give, what a mess
Hey drift tech i have heaps of parts if you need anything, anything for a fellow 2H owner ;)

Ok so with the diff still AWOL getting fixed, we charged the battery back up, fired her up straight away and with the exception of a minor front timing seal leak, there are no visible leaks anywhere.

Now I know the battery has carked it and is no good, but being a diesel could that possibly why it lost all power? I was under the impression that a diesel will run without need of a battery after startup? It was night time whilst I was driving so I can understand the lights etc draining the battery, but would it need the battery to run? Once the vehicle had stopped, lights turned off, it would slowly crank but not fire. Obviously the battery being flat and the diesel needing a decent amount of cca would contribute to it not starting, but would it cause the engine to lose power and shut down? It is on a dual battery setup as well.

I've bought a replacement battery for it, a good Optima D34 760CCA Yellow top, bit of overkill but with a 5 year warranty on it, it offers peace of mind. Can't test the vehicle under load until the diff is fixed, hopefully today to see if it is the battery or not.

Any suggestions?
