Which winch

Hi All

im having an alloy winch bar made for the 98 - 2005 GV and i have access to tmax winches, i have always intended to supply the 9000 pound unit to have the bar built around but im now unsure if this is to big for the car

any thoughts?? I have never owned a winch before.


ps - has to be alloy to be airbag compliant

i have a tmax 9000 on my coily sierra and it is great.
it would suit a gv fine.
The pulling power of the 9000 is a little over 4t

as long as the mounts and chassis can take the load a 9000 should be ok.

I have heard that T-Max have been having issues with solenoids and motors and gearing all playing up. In each case the people I have spoken to have said that their warranty service is great but they are getting sick of components having to be replaced all of the time. Hence they have gone to Warn, Tigerz, Ironman etc.

A winch is only as good as its owner. Give it love and it'll give you love in return; Piss on it and it'll make sure it pisses back when you need it most.

Personally I think 6000lbs is more than you will ever need in a zook.

And when the time comes that you need to pull that patrol or cruiser out just double up with a snatch block.

anything bigger than 600lbs weighs to much for a zook I belive.

I got a tigerz 11 12000 pound on my sierra. It came with plasma rope and wireless control and isolator for $799 delivered . It weighs 23 Kg with the rope. I m really happy with it

whats the smallest `real`winch ie not boat/trailer things that is suitable for selfish sierra driver who only needs to pull himelfad the odd micro 4x4 out?

(i would help out bigger fourbies by the usual nonwinch methods)

a while back on ebay i guy listed a wnch behind a modified stock bumper i`d like something like that the neatness apeals to me and i`m gueesing a smaller winch is a lesser drain on the battery/alternator

i have a 9000 and i can strap to a tree and pull a full size truck with 44s out when their sucked down in the mud with no problem . every one tells me i can hook to a good size branch and lift my zuk straight up

i have a warn hi mount on mine and it works great with a standard alternator. but winches are not cheap so get one you can justify for the ammount of times your planing to need it no point having a 10,000 if you only want it for just in case a small one would be fine.

I skim read the 4wdaction winch comparo and the ironman winch pulled some of the lowest currents and made the entire test with the only down fall having water in the motor and gbox, but one of the cheaper warn winchs had water in it too and didn't complete the track! Brand names may not be worth it. I will be buying an iron man.

i have had a t-max 6500 for 8 months now, completely reliable.
however it is siting in a mates shed.
i do have a 3500 on the back of my sierra and using a snatch block it
is usually enough to get me out.
the winch is behind the numberplate.
