My 80 wont stay on a hill

Post by land8079 »

Just wonderin if any one can shed some light on this for me. I got an 80 series GXL wagon and have found that if i park it on a verry steep incline, with the hand break on (its poo) and in 1st gear low range that it will roll backwards verry slowly. i thought mabey rings but it dosent use a ounce of oil beetween changes. I've steeped out of a 75 ute(wich dident do it) into the wagon, is it simply a weight thing or do i have a problem.

In 1st low it should stay on a hill!

I remember when i first left mine on a hill in front of a mates... we went out for a bit and when we came back it was in the middle of the road about 200m away.. funny but embarrassing .. Lucky no one ran into it, cos it was on a corner

It's really not that hard to adjust your handbrake!

if facing up hill isnt it supposed to go in reverse? or does it make no difference?

I know a lux is lighter, but even with a trailer on with my old petrol = no compression i cold park on some nasty hills in low r and no go anywhere.

sounds like its pretty stretched. is there no way of adjusting the cable? or is it already maxed out? if so chuck a new cable in.

this is common your cruiser has probably put on some weight and you need to turn the (usually larger wheels into the gutter.
OR put an auto in it....lol

I find resting the front or rear bar against a tree helps! especially if the tree is on the low side :finger:

Adjust the brake at the wheels and the cable. Im yet to see any rear axle handbrake you can "trust" on a 40+ degree hill

I normally adjust the brakes up tight and back off 6 or 7 clicks, you can adjust the cable in the cab at the handbreak lever ( i had to grind down a spanner to fit) but this is only a temporary fix as the cable will stretch again. Maybe try a new cable.

I've seen this happen in a 1HZ 100 series too. The handbrakes can be a bit of a shit to get adjusted on these sometimes.

The quick easy way to tighten your handbrake is let it roll backwards or in reverse and pull the hand brake on (do it about 6 times) sometimes it works. If not then manually.

on a 40 degree slope i would be worried about the tyres losing traction as much as my handbrake not holding.
