UHF will receive fine but not transmit

Post by T_Diesel »

I've discovered my UHF will receive but not transmit. When I key the mike, the radio shows it is transmitting but no signal is received by another radio. The antenna connections are good and i've also tested with another mike and it still didn't work, so that is not the problem either. And no its not on duplex mode.

Any other ideas?

I had the same problem. Refitted and soldered the plug cured it. May pay to give it a try as mine looked OK but was the problem.

A friend of mine has a similar problem - can hear but not transmit. The mic lead socket has carked it internally. When you hold it in a certain way, it does transmit. He has to pull it apart and resolder the connections - when he has time. It has been like this for a year now and he still hasn't done it....

Mine is in the dash so taking the unit out requires a bit of effort. Sucks to that.

I had similiar problem ,but mine would transmit when first turned on
Once it warmed up it wouldnt transmit at all
Local communications shop tested it an found a couple of bad connections inside unit
Cost me $50 to get it fixed

Well, it's officially rooted or a $150 fix. The joints on the board have weathered and cracked away fom the microphone socket on the unit. My soldering skills aint good enough to fix it and its an old radio so probably not worth the money.

Decided to splash out and get a new Icom unit. The reviews are pretty good on it and I have been assured I won't regret my purchase.

Am I safe to piggy back permanent power for the unit off a fused 25A line that currently powers a merrit plug in the dash?

I would use the current power supply, however its connected to my cranking and last time I got back from a trip, I left the UHF on and didn't drive the truck for a month!

if you fuse the uhf wires that should be fine, otherwise connect it to acc power and not have to worry about leaving it on then
