1998 2.8L diesel problem starting.

Post by [T]Matty »

Hay, this is my first post and i hope it can help me out a little..

I have a 1998 Turbo Diesel rodeo i have had some problems with.. here is the story

The stock turbo decided one day that it had enough and thats where my problems started..

I did a bit of a turbo upgrade, got new water and oil lines made up. made a 3" dump to 2.5" system for it, got adapter plates made to sute the new turbo and so on..

But then it wouldn't start, i put it down to all the oil from the turbo in the clys and got mate around here that come up with my battery was rooted and my glow plugs were not working. So i got a new battery and he manually glowed the plugs, got it started and let it run to clear all the oil.. there was alot.

all seemed fine but now after i go for a drive around the block 2-3 times and come home it wont start, like its got a flat battery, i put it on charge overnight and in the morning it starts like it always did, in under a second...

there is no charge light on the dash, when i remove the battery the car still runs, i put a new relay in the "charge" spot.. nothing seems to be helping, i was cranking it one night then looked under the bonnet and - on the starter was glowing a little..

I put a new starter neg to body wire, also a motor to battery neg and body to battery. not removing the stock ones just doing another of each. didn't help one little bit.

after a drive when its hot the battery is reading 14Vish with the car off, then i go to start it, it reads under 10. I had the battery tested at repco on 2 testers and it was OK, used a smaller battery out of my VL turbo commodore that's 480 CCA and it didn't help at all also..

Any idea's what it could be? sorry for the low grade English :P long day..
Matty.

I would think it is the starter solenoid ,
what difference did the dump pipe and exhaust give you , also who made it up for you as I am having trouble finding someone to make a dump pipe for my 1997 2800 Turbo Rodeo.

in the end it was my starter stuck out and fingerd.. put a new starter on from an 4jb2? i think it was and it starts like it should.

thanks everyone

oh i made the exhaust myself. i couldnt tell you how much of a difference it made as i did the 2JZ turbo convert on at the same time. But when i has the stock turbo i took my exhaust off under the drivers seat, didnt make any noticeable power gains.
