hi all just after some advice, the old boys 85model 60 series is hard to start now its come into the colder months, i have a manual for it but doesnt cover some things
Q is the glow plug system 12v (it does only have one battery but some engines can run 6v) also what is the spec for resistance across th glow plug.
Q. should there be a seperate manual switch that can operate the glow other than what normally is through the key switch
Q i read some where about a coolant temp sensor in the system, does this check eng temp and stop operating the glow when warm
so the best way to check voltage at the power strap is when could assuming full power is not achieved when eng is hot.
before checking glow plug resistance i checked power at strap and only got around 3-4 volts, how ever the vehicle was warm
any help would be greatly appreciated
luke

2H glow plug question
Moderators: toaddog, Elmo, DUDELUX
there is onely one real way to check glow plugs there is a resitance value however they dont genrally find the faulty glow plug. what i have found best is to put the body of the glow plug on the negative or a good grounded point on the car and run 12v from the battery positive to the glow plug (where the bridge connector goes and it will glow in about 3seconds and if its stuffed it will not glow at all. that would be my first check. providing you can hear the relay clicking.
Just turn the key on till the glow plug light goes out if its hard to start do it twice in a row if its easier to start most likely the glow plugs .
Most toyotas use 12v, some early ones like the bundy used a step down system so it was a 12v system but uses 6v glow plugs

The old manual that I have states that there should be a glow in the glow lamp after 15 seconds. If not it`s time for new plugs. There is a variety of volts in glow plugs that fit 2h diesels.Rule of thumb though is higher the voltage the quicker they glow and shorter the life.I think from memory they start at about 8 volt and go to about 11.5 volts.

this is a landcruiser only forum, ans search for "wilson switch"
they bypass the standard glowplug timer, with a simple circuit, so in the colder months/climates, u can turn the glowplugs on for say 10 seconds, b4 starting, and they will fire everytime
jsut a thought mate.
i only have 5 GP in my 2H, as we snapped one off in the head, i just glow the car twice before winding and have no dramas
