Tacho for standard 80 series
I want to put a tacho into a standard '96 80 series, whats the options with guages and best way to do it properly
You have 2 options and it depends if you want a 'meant to be there' look or dont mind the look of the after market tacho.
1. Get an instrument cluster out of a GXL and put that in. This will only work, however, if your injector pump has the tacho sender on it. The standard models didn't out of the factory but if your pump has been overhauled you might be lucky. You can get it put on but it won't be cheap. If you need the sender fitted you could be looking at a costly exercise. You may also need the overhead gauges for sub fuel if you go this route. I am lucky enough that my pump has the tacho sender on it. This is the route I'm going to take soon.
2. Get a VDO tacho that picks up off the alternator W terminal. You will need to do some calculations and calibration but it's not too bad. This is an easy option. What you dont want to do is go and buy a tacho from your local auto parts store as they typically require you to put a pickup over the ignition lead.
There's a fair bit of info on the LCOOL forums about this - www.lcool.org/forum. I've been researching this for quite some time.

80 Series Diesel poverty pack
This is probably your best option for an aftermarket gauge.
