Jimny suddenly loses power

Hi Folks,

Just wondering if anyone knows what this might be...

89 manual Jimny with about 95000km on it.

Every now and then it'll lose power suddenly, to the degree that you get jerked forward a couple of inches. It's happened in suburban driving at 60kmh, and also going downhill on a highway at 110.

It's not like pressing the clutch and the car coasts, it literally feels like it's being pulled back, and the engine note drops a bit, and then it'll come back and full power is restored. Sometimes it'll drop, pick up, drop, pick up again, a second or two each time.

What's odd is that this has happened in the same place on two occasions, and one of them is a road I don't drive on regularly - as in it's happened twice in the 3 times I've driven on that particular road (60kmh suburban driving).

It's perplexing because there doesn't seem to be any common conditions, and it's only happened maybe 5 or so times over the past year or two, so it's hard to describe to a mechanic, because they're not about to experience it in testing. It's pretty unnerving when it happens however, so I'm concerned about doing long drives in the car.

So, any suggestions?

Do you mean 98? Does it pulse a bit when it happens? like when you say it drops then picks up its almost like a heart beat?
I had a 98 jimny and it did something similar in it, and it happened to be a problem with computer.
They aparently called them back or changed it when people went in for service.
We didnt know about it as ours was secondhand and had just come out of warranty, but suzuki replaced it for us under warranty which was very blooody good of them.

If it's not computer related it could be blocked fuel lines/filter or your catalytic converter may be on its way out restricting the flow of exhaust gases causing the symptoms you describe.

it happened to me...zook was driving fine then surging really badly then fine again until it actually stopped dead. it was a completely block Cat.

If its a blocked/collapsed cat you can give it a tap with a rubber mallet to see if the honey comb catalyst inside is just broken away and blocking the cat. It will sound like the cat is full of sand and rocks when you tap it.

i get exactly the same thing in my 97 sierra that i have the g13bb in, i really hope it is not the computer suzuki won't happily replace mine haha.

mines not fuel, it seems way to random to be the cat but will have to look into it. It is such a strange feeling, feels exactly like when your turn a hard corner with low fuel and the engine starves ? is that what yours feels like mattg?

if you have a g13bb engine (that with single camshaft) i would suggest you to check and eventually replace the camshaft position sensor.

I think your right. i've just bought one from suzukistore about $120.00 havn't fitted it yet. mine broke down under low spead load when it got hot under the bonnet.

You have a Series 1 and you are experiencing the 'Series 1 Hiccup'. This is due to a faulty crank angle sensor, which will need to be replaced.

In the meantime, when it happens (generally in top gear at around 90-110kph) just push your clutch pedal in, tap the accelerator twice then release the clutch - this temporarily 'resets' it. But do get it swapped out - just about all the Series 1 Jimny's have this issue.

it is correct.

one simple way to check if the camshaft sensor is gone, is to put some water on it when the engine problem appears.

engine should be ok for some minutes until the sensor gets hot again.

does your g13bb engine has a distributor like the g13ba?

nope it has coil packs, everything is the same as the other just no crank angle sensor, has the cam sensor and everything else the same, they are normally near the harmonic balancer hey ?

ok,

then it is a common g13bb engine.
the g133bb hasn't any crankshaft sensor but it has the camshaft sensor positioned in the left back of the head.
i would check it...

the cranckshaft sensor has been introduced in the 2001-onwards jimny engines with double camshaft and is another source of problems

yeah so they are the ones that cause this hesitation problem ? mine doesn't do the low speed heat one.
