I don't compete in this kind of thing but I have noticed that there seem to be more autos creeping in to winch challenge.

I'd run auto, but take what you like out of that because, as I said, I don't compete.

AFAIK, the only downside to an auto in a 4wd is engine braking on steep descents. I wouldn't expect that to be an issue for winch challenge, so I can't think of any other reason why I wouldn't choose an auto.

But, like Steve, I don't compete, and have no plans to do so.

Seems the patrol manual box can handle plenty of power.
A standard th700 in a heavy 4wd would be under a lot of stress - i.e. you would have to mod the auto.

When I built my first comp rangie around 2002 I swapped the LT95 manual for a ZF Auto. At the time we were one of the few vehicles with an auto competing in Qld comps (the ony other one I can recall at the time was Mike Clayton in his auto v6 gaylux) but I've noticed that a lot of them are now autos.

IMHO the auto is definately the way to go.

What do you prefer to drive with auto or manual? Answer that, then put it in the car.

I competed for years in trials style of events with an auto, and it was good, keep them cool and clean (oil) and they will go forever.
Modded th700 is what i used.

Manual. All the way.

I like the auto idea in a buggy but a manual in something for speed any day.

I just like how thrashable they are, dupping clutch to get wheel speed, compression braking etc.

herm bit of mixed appinons there...
spoke to a auto guy and he said that u have to spend some serious money to get a box to handle getting floged and they would need to be re-built more often and there is allot more that can go wrong with them..
so manuel seems to be the way to go..

any one beg to differ..?

So i'm your type then am I F wit ?

It all depends on how well you can hell / toe the throttle and brake.

I personally dont feel like I have enough control in an auto.

As RV80 said, what do you enjoy driving ?

You spoke to AN auto guy.

Go and speak to some more. Yes, these is a lot more that CAN go wrong with an auto, but if you keep them cool, almost nothing ever does.

There's still only one gearbox that allows you to shift under full power with no loss of momentum, only one gearbox that you can shift in deep mud without loosing momentum, and one gearbox you can 100% match sinch line speed with under any circumstances, and it's not a manual.

Your Gen3 can bolt up to a T700, which likely would need some beefing up to cope with comp use, or a T400 or 4L80E, which wouldn't need beefing at all.
