what do you need to know?
different gear box cross member, both tail shafts, (rear is longer front is shorter )( rear use a smaller yoke and flanges.) need to change the rear diff flange if using 4.2 shafts and transfer, if keeping the 2.8 transfer just cut a bit of the front on the transfer to bolt up to the 4.2 box, you can get away with the 2.8 rear shaft but not the front.
engine mounts, you can make a new engine bracket to suit the different position of the right chassis mount, the left bolt up using two bolt engine mounts.
make up a new engine wiring loom, (you can use the 2.8 glow system, )
2.8 glow plugs screw in.
engine fan and clutch.
the 2.8 radiator you can get away with
A/C compressor clutch is different, you can use the 4.2 clutch ( the pulley part)
other stuff but I carnt think of it now,
cheers.

well then
Pretty basic swap guys you will need a 4.2 radiator the motor with all ancillarys power steer air con etc 4.2 gearbox i swapped my transfer over fitted straight up had to remove old eng mounts and reweld the original 4.2 mounts in place [ had to have gearbox and motor in place for this ] as for gear box mount crossmember they are the same tail shafts just bolted them back in no dramas at all PAID me to have a good mate a lecco on hand to do all the elec stuff took him about six hours to rewire a new loom out of the two old looms . Get a partial blue slip and pay ya money at rta away you go ALL UP SIX DAYS i had a donour truck sitting next to my truck really think this is the way to go if you can manage this 92 model 4.2 into 97 2.8

HEYA PATROLMAN Not saying that you are wrong but seems like you had some dramas with tail shafts and transfer and g/box crossmember / did you use a ute or sumthin ??? just curious

My GU was a 2.8 , the cross member bolts the transfer case mounts about 50mm further back, fitting a 4.2 crossmember allows the engine mount to line up on the left, using your old 4.2 right hand engine mount bracket and a new blank steel plate you can fabricate a new mount to suit the right hand. This allows the use of the factory chassis mounts.
I have a fair hand up on what was needed, I had done a lot of research before hand and found lots of good stuff about what was needed, most of the stuff I sourced and was ready to go.
had to cut and shut both gear sticks,

ok
Mate all i did was remove both eng mounts then fitted gearbox in original crossmember , then fit up of 4.2 eng and fit up of rad to get right angle or height tacked in the mounts removed the eng welded the mounts and refit motor and rad final fit with new clutch and anything else we could renew all fitted in no mods to anything just the mounts but THATS COOL everyone does things there own way . Have you had any problems at all , only thing i had was a leak that developed early this year behind front timing cover [coolant] been fixed now

I think you will find your motor sits 50mm further back than the factory set up. The way you did yours sound easier, less stuff to swap over. I had 4 bolt engine mounts and chassis brackets ready to go but after reading up on in all it seemed easier to fabricate one new engine bracket.
I ran into trouble with the 2.8 fan and clutch that I used, there was not much clearance between the fan and the radiator , not a problem until I drove thought some deep water up the cape, (fan folded over and pierced the radiator (only a couple of blades short of a fan! )
cheers
