What would you do?
Hi All,
I know you have seen plenty of these types of posts but im selfish so i wanted one of my very own!
I am looking at a budget of about $7000 over the next couple of years and want to know what you guys and gals would be buying for the surf and what mods you would be doing (in order would be really nice if you can be bothered)
So far we have:
90 model 2.4 diesel surf manual
OME suspension all round with 2" lift
Snorkel
ARB bull bar with winch spot (no winch)
2.5" exhaust straight through
Cargo Barrier
standard size pro comp all terrain on standard rims
I have it booked into get the gearbox repaired due to a prob with second and will be getting a new radiator.
Most of my driving will be around Vic and mostly around Gippsland and hopefully the high country, as well as on the road as second car.
Really appreciate your time and feedback.
Cheers
Brett

don't listen to them lol, but then again they could have said 'buy a nissan'
You can make $7k go pretty far if your smart. Im planning to buildup one of these, not that I have bought it yet.
But with $7k, I would be looking at twin lockers, 33's bodylift and some more barwork. Also make sure have a EGT & maybe boost gauge, just stuff to keep an eye on the motor.
Depends on how hard core you wanna go, you could do a sas, and your budget would allow for that, but then you have to get new diff gears, strengthened cvs, axles, hubs. then it leads to Crawler gears, dual cases, depends where you wanna stop really.
Keep an eye out, you could save by gettin 2nd hand lockers from a hilux.

the donk is 2.4 2L-T? is so get a radiator asap they sensative with anything to do with cooling especially the head and cylinder no 4.
EGT also since the HEADs don't like heat. then the gearbox.
Seen SURFs make monkeys of plenty of big toyz
High country travel get a good winch and battery setup. e.g. XD9000 or similar and in dash controller and high quality cables (300 amp or 600 amp welding cable) albright solenoid not warns stuff.

don't take it personally. the 2.4 surf is about the worst 4WD toyota has ever sold. massively unreliable engine, underpowered, pathetic offroad performance and reliability from the front end. awful clearance issues under the front suspension crossmember and rear trailing arm hangers.
you can spend $7k on it and it will still be awful, and less reliable.
as others have suggested, if you are keen on a genuine offroad vehicle, sell it and pool the cash form the sale with your $7k and build a cruiser or hilux or patrol or rangie.
if you insist on building the surf, you're going to need a lot more that $7k to make it perform offroad. yes you can lift it and lock it and put some big rubber on it for your $7k but it will still suck. to really get it working offroad you need to modify the rear suspension with longer control arms, you need to SAS it up front, and ratios will need changing. the engine will need major work or a complete replacement with something more powerful, more economical, and more reliable.
if you just want to be a bolt-on bandit, winch, f and r lockers, and 33" mud tyres will cost about $7k.

hahahaah!! Sorry bud but yeh, thats actually 4wdrivers talk for shite hot advice!!NICK wrote:invest $6900, use the other 100 bucks to buy a couple or sheets of plastic so your pants dont get wet trying to piss into the wind.
Sell the surf, and as DD said, dont take it personal we are here to help, and occasionally laugh

Get out there!!
From someone who has actually been down this path i have to agree with dunce. I bought a 92 surf, Put a 4"lift in, 33's rear locker, barwork at the end of the day i was left with an underpowered vehicle, that still really struggled off road and drove like crap on road that i still wanted to SAS and repower which in total would have cost me about $20k for what was still only really going to be worth $5k.dumbdunce wrote:don't take it personally. the 2.4 surf is about the worst 4WD toyota has ever sold. massively unreliable engine, underpowered, pathetic offroad performance and reliability from the front end. awful clearance issues under the front suspension crossmember and rear trailing arm hangers.

This time i think i did it right. 94 diesel 80 series with turbo that was already twin locked. Full bar work, shower, draws, etc. It came with a 2"lift and sneeked a set of 35's under it and i'm left with a very capable car that drives well which owes me $15k and probably still work $10-$13k.
If you like the idea of a smaller 4wd, i'd buy a 22r bundera and bolt a 3rz (2.7l pet) into it wheel the piss out of it.
