How to find my diff ratio

Post by dansharp »

Looking to find what ratio my rear diff is. Car only recently bought so have no idea if it is an original diff or not. It is in a 1985 Hilux dual cab diesel. Cheers

Trans/axle code on the plate under the bonnet.

Last 3 number should be the axle code.

Ring Mr toyota spares and tell em you need one, ask what ratio they are offering to replace it.

cheers

If you have the axle code of your vehicle, it is easy to find out what size differential, what ratio, and what pinion set-up you have. This will also help if you are hunting for a particular unit off another vehicle. The axle code is in the vehicle ID plate under the hood or drivers door. The axle code is 4 digits: a letter followed by 3 numbers.

Example: G292 = 8.0" 4.10 final ratio 2 pinion
Code:
1ST R&P SIZE 2nd/3rd R&P RATIO 4th DIGIT PINION SET-UP
F = 7.5" 07 = 3.900 2 = 2 pinion
G = 8.0" 08 = 4.110 3 = 2 pinion LSD
10 = 4.375 4 = 4 pinion
14 = 4.875 5 = 4 pinion LSD
25 = 4.556
28 = 4.300
29 = 4.100
31 = 3.91
38 = 3.42
43 = 3.56
54 = 3.90
66 = 3.07
.
.
Code:
Ratio Ring/Pinion Color Crawl:Ratio
3.42 ...42/12... Purple ...31:1
3.90 ...39/10... Red... ...36:1
4.10 ...41/10... Pink.. ...37:1
4.11 ...37/09... Orange ...37:1
4.30 ...43/10... Blue.. ...39:1
4.37 ...35/08... Green. ...40:1
4.56 ...41/09... Yellow ...41:1
4.88 ...39/08... White. ...44:1
5.29 ...37/07... None.. ...48:1
5.71 ...40/07... None.. ...51:1

What are the last 3 numbers/letters on the trans/axle plate.

Weiner has given you all the info you need, being a 85 model deisel it will be 4.3 or 4.5

Mine were 4.5s til i went 4.88's, and mine was a 84 diesel dual cab, with 31's standard according to the trans/axle code's.

mark the pinion flange, and mark the tyre. Have someone rotate the tyre one full turn and watch the pinion and count how many times it turns,

eg 4 1/2 turns + 4.5:1, 4 1/3 turns + 4.3:1 almost 5 turns probably 4.88:1

It will be a 4.56 if its still the stock centre.

You do not have to pull the centre out to check it if your unsure on it ever being changed. Jack one wheel up. Put a mark on the pinion flange. Now turn the wheel one full rotation. While doing this count how many rotations the pinion does. Then multiply it by two. That will give you the ratio.

If you only rotate the tyre once you need to multiply the pinion by 2. Unless the vehicle is fitted with a spool or locker and its locked.

can someone tell me, out of all the hilux ratios 4.3 4.5 4.8 etc is the tooth count on the pinion the same and just the ring that is different? or do they both change?

cheers

Yes, its more accurate to rotate the tyre twice rather than multiplying the pinion.
