Noisey rear diff....62 series
I want to fix the hum in the bum
Leaking oil at input shaft seal, so I'm assuming this is where the noise is coming from...
Coupla Questions.............
Can you buy a bearing and seal kit for this job?
Do you have to take the diff centre out to be able to get the correct torque on assembly?
What is the best way to get the bearing out, or will I have to get the special tool for the job?
Would it be easier to just get hold of another diff centre

Re: Noisey rear diff....62 series
most definitely your easiest option is to find another centre and swap it in. a second hand open 60 series diff in decent condition should cost around $250 - $300, a limited slip one maybe $400 - $450. if you put an ad in the wanted section you should come up with something fairly quickly.rattlinjack wrote:I want to fix the hum in the bum

if yours has been humming for a while there is a very good chance that not only are the bearings stuffed but the gears are also damaged - in which case the parts cost alone to refurbish your diff will exceed $700.
diff rebuilding is not something the average or even above average home mechanic can tackle, there are special tools and skills required, and the cost of the tools and the acquiring of the required skill will exceed the cost of repairing one or two or five diffs.
sorry this doesn't specifically answer your questions in order but should give you an idea.
if you really want to have a crack at it yourself, I can give more information.
cheers

So it's not just a bearing noise then?
Looks like I'll have to post in the wanted section!
Will there be any things to watch out for when bolting up another diff centre?

if the bearings are on the way out, most of the noise will come from the misalignment of the gears caused by excessive clearance in the bearings. if the gears have been misaligned for some time they will wear prematurely and will not set up correctly once new bearings are installed.rattlinjack wrote:Whew, thanks dumbdunce!

the hardest part of replacing a diff on a landcruiser is probably removing the cone washers that hold the axle in. the only other tricky bis is that it is heavy and it s a good idea to have some help to maneuver the diff out and in.

Tap the studs with a medium ball pein and punch, they will pop out.dumbdunce wrote:the hardest part of replacing a diff on a landcruiser is probably removing the cone washers that hold the axle in.

And, as for getting the diff in and out, a teaspoon of cement DD??
Get out there!!

there are blokes who can safely lift a diff in and out, and there are some who can't - if you have never done one before it's far better to err on the side of caution - it's awkward and heavy enough to cause serious injury - muscle strains, hernias, nasty cuts, fingers off, even a broken rib or skull fracture if you manage to get yourself underneath - for some of us its no big deal to lift them in and out all day, but there is a serious potential hazard and it deserves to be shown due respect.Wozza244 wrote:Tap the studs with a medium ball pein and punch, they will pop out.dumbdunce wrote:the hardest part of replacing a diff on a landcruiser is probably removing the cone washers that hold the axle in.

I've had to lift a coupla gearboxes in by my self over the years, won't ever do it again, not even with a teaspoon of cement No trolley jacks in those days! But you are still scaring me, dumbdunce...dumbdunce wrote:there are blokes who can safely lift a diff in and out, and there are some who can't - if you have never done one before it's far better to err on the side of caution - it's awkward and heavy enough to cause serious injury - muscle strains, hernias, nasty cuts, fingers off, even a broken rib or skull fracture if you manage to get yourself underneath - for some of us its no big deal to lift them in and out all day, but there is a serious potential hazard and it deserves to be shown due respect.Wozza244 wrote:Tap the studs with a medium ball pein and punch, they will pop out.dumbdunce wrote:the hardest part of replacing a diff on a landcruiser is probably removing the cone washers that hold the axle in.
