sierra tailshaft uni 4th in 6 months

So my sierra actually spat out the rear 1/2 of my tailshaft this afternoon on my way home from our local wheeling spot, as i took off at some lights.

The rearmost uni let go ~6 months ago and chewed the shaft end. I got it fixed at local drive shaft guy, he had to cut the uni off, weld a new one on, balance, etc. I have since replaced the same uni on warranty, and once again by a mate just a week ago.

Im thinking of fabbing up a cv tailshaft similar to mart (pictured) but with the cv at the diff end, unless any one can suggest some other solution...

I've had similar probs but have just got a hold of some greasable unijoint's as all the others seem to wear too fast because of mud and sand getting in and chewing them out. I dunno if they are going to last much longer tho I've only just fitted them (today). I also have an auto locker which I think puts huge amounts of extra strain on the uni's.

hey dad did the rear shaft actually seperate from the transfer half of the shaft or did it just destroy the rear uni?

Post some pics of the angles etc, mods you ahve done. sound like you may be getting some axle wrap on acceleration which might be flogging the uni quickly...

kitika, I'v got a noise coming from what i think is the front uni.. not 100% but would like to replace none the less.. dont suppose you have a part number by any chance or know the uni size!?

surely wrap can't do a uni in 6 months... mines had wrap for a year and a half and no damage to uni's at all - and one end front and back is hilux double cardan joint, so if a uni's gonna blow its going to be the pinion end which is still factory zuk... but nothing yet.

i'd be thinking its bad uni's... you been using the same brand every time?

Have a look at the diff flange and the transfer flange. Are they parallel? Do you get vibrations?

yep, wrap can kill unis in less than 6 months easy.

as bluesuzy said, check your tailshaft is balanced and always greased up.

Mine was mainly due to tramping and diff rotated too much

kitika - My local guy can only get non greasable ones.

dank - yeah man, it spat the rear half of the shaft out on the road as i took off at a set of lights. I knew the uni was flogged out by the mega vibrations i was getting on the way home, but had to get home none the less, and have driven alot further with shagged uni's in the past.

alien - 1 week ago i replaced said uni with a uni from my parts car, all the other times were same brand.

bluesuzy - bingo. my diff is pointing way up, compared to my stocker parts zook.

now off to the garage to workout why....

i'll check out my hardy spicer catalouge when i'm at work tomorrow and i'll see if i can find any matching size uni joints that are greasable.

would side, centre or end cap lubrication points be better?

Sorry I don't have the uni packet with me otherwise i'd give you the number. I got mine at the local bearing shop and asked for greasable ones specifically and they cost about $20-$25 (bought them about 6 months ago just havent fitted them) I can get the number on the weekend if some else hasn't got them up already.

Just finished looking through the hardy-spicer catalogue and have had no luck finding a lubricated replacement

Sizes part number and applications as follows
SJ410 - 1981-1987 - 1.0L With 25mm End Caps
SJ413 - 1987-2000 - 1.3L With 25mm End Caps

Use RUJ-1795 front and rear of both shafts
End Cap - 25mm
Width circlip to circlip - 42.90mm
Non-lubricated
Nothing available in exact size lubricated

SJ413 - 1985-1999 - 1.3L With 22mm End Caps
Use RUJ-1501 front and rear of both shafts
End Cap - 22mm
Width circlip to circlip - 40mm
Non-lubricated
Nothing available in exact size lubricated

Jack shaft for 1.3L
Use K5-A556
End Cap - 25mm
Width outside to outside - 63.80mm
Lubricated in bearing cap.

So it turns out iv'e snapped a leaf in the rear right hand spring pack, which i'm guessing isn't helping pinion angle, and also the fact im running 100mm shackles with dead flat springs.

Thanks for all the help / useful info everyone.

After a good inspection under the car, it turns out i've a shit load of work to do, so the diffs are coming out, i have a few sets of diffs laying about and am toying with the idea of going SOA on old cruiser diffs.

I have chewed one uni, and it was my 2" lift but with super long shackles(double size) Sounds like yours....I give it a hard time though as well.

I had to have a taper block in the front because of the shackles also, camber/caster etc = mega wobbles.

Now with the springs i run now no taper up front, but i now have it in the rear because of my pinion angle..

hey dad it might have something to do with you smashing your tailshaft on rocks when u try winching yourself up steps, or when u r doing donuts in the mud for half an hour at a time

i have more of a angle than you between my transfer and diff and i have never had a problem

just though i might add.

i am currently getting my rear and jackshaft rebuild and ballanced. i asked the guy if he could get me greasable one but he said his supplyer doesnt have greaseable one and that solid unis are stronger. i belive him because i did about 4 unis in 6months each time i used a greasable one and usto grease it ever 2 weeks or so.
when i had a solid uni in the rear its lasted over a year thats when i went greasable. but now going back to solid.
