A few Hilux questions...
Hey Guys,
I'm new to the boards so don't abuse me if something I say is a bit noob, I'm the equivalent of a technical idiot.
A few of my questions have already been covered by MTYLUX but I have a couple more.
Installing exhaust and extractors - what if any power gains would I be looking at? I'd have to get a workshop to do the job, but at the moment with the 2L engine I have 88kws for 1990kgs of steel - so a bit sluggish at times (or all the time).
Currently I have 31x10.5" tyres and a one inch lift - would there be any consequences to upgrade to 32s/33s with the same width?
Are there any decent bolt on turbo kits for this engine? It's probably not on the cards, but just out of interest.
My whole engine needs a bit of TLC, so I'm having the damn thing checked out and overhauled next week... should be fun on the bank balance!

For interests sake, I do some light off-roading, tow my horses, and have rather large dogs in the car quite frequently.

So, in other words, you now know less than you did before... na just kidding.
Yep, the 2L is no powerhouse, I have the same motor recently rebuilt in my Camolux, turbo is sitting in a box ready to go on, but I'm quite happy with the power on the road. I run 31 muds as the streeters, change to 34's as trail tyre, and plenty of power, even when towing my trailer. How many kays on the motor?
You would prolly benefit most from a pump rebuild and reco injectors, provided the motor doesn't have too much blowby - when the motor is running, remove the oil filler cap (710 joke ) and if it does the puffing billy impression, it might warrant further investigation.
upgrading tyre sizes may create some scrubbing issues without other mods, but if you tow a float I would leave the tyres as they are, you will lose significant cruising ability (with the float) if you upsize your tyres.

Thanks Area54 - the 'puffing billy' impression isn't too bad, checked this on Sunday (drained 1.5l of sludge :o ) however the motor has 376xxx kms on it. It is getting a bit tired, but I don't think it's anything that can't be fixed.
Damn. I realise that I'd only be going for the bigger tyres for looks, but still :(. I had the Maxxis Buckshot MT tyre recommended to me, basically i need something mid-price range and ok for street, baby trails and stuff.

for the tyres u should get a friend who has a set of 33's and size it up on ur car to check if it would scrub or not, 32's would be fine as 83 lux use to run 32 inch all terrains on his lux with absolutely no lift so that shouldnt be a prob, and i dont think 33's would present much of a problem to but i would size it up first just to make sure

How much *more* difficult will it be to turn with 33s instead of 31s? I have no power steering and being tiny (yes I am tiny) i now have rather impressive biceps for a chick... will it make turning/parallel parking even more bitchy?

If your engine has done that many k's and is a bit crook, you could be doing your money on a overhaul and turbo kit. Youd be looking at upwards of $1,000 easy for a turbo kit, and then an engine overhaul would probably be about that on top.
Extractors and exhaust wont add that much of a noticeable difference... maybe about 10kw (?) but every little bit helps. Fitting a snorkle and getting more air in there will help to (im looking down that track atm with my 2L).
As greenhilux said, fitting 33's would be fairly easy on a hilux that age, depending on how much your springs have sagged overtime, as the guards are fairly shallow.
33's and no power steering could present problems.. you could look at getting power steering fitted from a 4Runner or later model hilux.. Picking up the whole front end from a wrecker would be easier than fitting it.
Basically this sport comes down to working in steps... saving for your next bit of work rather than trying to do it all at once (unless you have won lottery or something).
All in all.. welcome to the board, there is plenty of help around if you need it

Hilux stuff
G'day, I have 33" muddies on an '82 lux with a 1.5" body lift and very little spring lift and the tyres only rub under full artic on the front at the firewall and full left lock on the end of the steering arm. They are heavy as hell to turn. I am 6'4" and 95 k's. Get power steering if you go to bigger tyres.

Well, two of my tyres exploded on the weekend, and the lux is now stuck in Stawell... So, in other words I was definitely due for tyres, although I should be able to get warrenty on one as the compound came apart. I need to also pick up a longarm jack to get the spare down as well.
I have decided to stick with the 31" - basically for the only reason that with a rim on, I'm JUST able to pick up the tyre by myself and throw it in the back - don't think I can lift a 33" by myself.
I have a snorkel already, so I guess that improves air flow. I think what i'll end up doing is overhauling the engine first, and then discussing a turbo kit with the mechanic.
Would I be driving an 85 model if I'd won the lottery?
