hey guys iv looks around on there and i cant really find a answer to my question.
im looking at getting a 80 series, either a 1hz and putting a axt turbo kit in it, or a 1hdt and doin some mods to that to gain more power.
it will be my everyday car, with mild lift, 33`s, and i dont want it to cost alot on fuel as i will be doin a few k`s.
my main problem is at the moment i have a holden crewman cross 8 that i use to tow my race car with. its a tuned ls1 and has a bit of pulling power, and easly tows the race car, the race car is a old holden one tonner with a big block, so its no light weight, so i need enough power to tow it to alot of interstate events. im not too keen on doing 80 from narre warren (vic) to canberra!
so i want some advice on which way to go. is a 1hz with a turbo kit goin to have more power than a 1hdt with some mods?
what are the best mods to do to a 1hdt? hiflow turbo? tune? more boost with stock turbo?

I'll give you a real life example.
I've got an 80 with a 1hz and AXT turbo kit. No intercooler, but I've fitted a pyro after the turbo to measure the temps and the AXT 2.5 inch mandrel exhaust kit. I do regular towing, short distances but with around 2-2.5 tonnes. When you are not towing the car is great and the exhaust temps stay within a good safe limit and the water temp stays in the normal half way spot. (I haven't done any mods to the water temp so it still has the half way numb spot.)
When towing the temp will climb when you are on a long hill. Eventually, if the hill is long enough and the exhaust temp gets to 500 for a little while, I've noticed my water temp will climb slightly. After the hill it comes back down, but you need to alter the way you drive a little. Towing most of the time in 4th if you have a heavy load reduces the exhaust temps but you need to monitor it. I've got a good radiator and I've changed the fan clutch (haven't added more oil to it). As long as you watch the temps all will be okay and its only a problem when you get to the hills.
Fuel economy is great, no major change from non-turbo. You will get plenty of km's from it and its consistent. I've got a small lift and 285/75's as you have mentioned that you would like to do, but with your towing I'd suggest sticking to the standard size tyre to make life easier on the engine.

Empty trailer? No worries. Put 2 tonnes on the trailer and its a different story. On flat ground it will keep close to 100 quite easily.ADAM 26 wrote:ok, will yours pull at 100kph still with the trailer on?

I haven't towed with a factory turbo diesel, but if you search through this forum, you'll find that most people say its far better. Its safer to boost them too as they are designed for turbos to begin with. It has a different head, different pistons and there are oil squirters under the pistons.
On the highway, it would be more like 12/100. But my driving is mostly city stop-start driving and I get closer to 14/100. And I can't comment on how much more the towing uses, but it's still not much more than 14/100.

the factory turbos have direct injection and lower compression and can be boosted to produce more power than a turbo 1HZ, but it comes down to how much you want to spend. a turbo kit on a 1HZ will make more power and torque than a factory turbo, but that is about the limit of a 1HZ without internal modifications.ADAM 26 wrote: is there anybenifit in using the factory turbo diesel? are they built any stronger? will they take more boost and makew more power than the n/a diesel with the turbo kit?
if you boost up and tweak the pump, add an intercooler and exhaust to a 1HD-T 140 kW and 500 Nm are around the easily obtainable limit for the factory turbo. upgrade the turbo and there is more to be gained without the risk of premature turbo death.

Personally I wouldn't tubo a 1hz, however my experience with aftermarket turbo toyotas is that they produce good power and torque reliably in short bursts but don't like sustained load e.g. towing or long hills. I have found that the exhaust temp gets high as does the coolant temp under these circumstances and you end up having to watch everything like a hawk - it gets tiresome. The factory turbo engines will work hard all day without too many problems and use less fuel doing it, so if you want to tow then go the 1HD-T or FT as they are both great engines.

it sounds a top buy, but hard to say. i would have gotten it 3 weeks ago but i bought a 96 for a tough more $$.
