There is a 100 series I might be inspecting in the coming week which will be going cheaply. Its got the 1FZ-FE engine and the car is generally in ordinary condition. It also has 300,000kms on it with no service history (own servicing). What are these engines like? I know it does depend on the history, although if I can get it for a good price, I can also factor in a engine / transmission change in the future if it decides to give up.
Currently got a older Hilux which Ive spend too much money on already although the cruiser would be a nice tourer and good off road too.
So, question is, steer clear or bu at the right price? Or keep the old leaf sprung Hilux

Ifz will do a few kays, but it will be getting tired by now, engines aren't to dear second hand for a low kay one, If you could get it cheap <10k then its proabably worth it.

all that mainly goes wrong is the valves reccess into the head closing up clearence and then burning out also corrosion in the cyl head can be a prob if the wrong coolant has been run
then you have clutchs and wheel bearings that wear out
but all in all very good cars just very thirsty
buy it and fit a1hdfte motor and you will love it
or if yo want to go fast fit the ls1/2 and yehah

Body has some marks which require work and interior is a bit filthy. Its been used for some long distance trips a bit!
It will be under $10k and Im not looking at a engine conversion as I dont really want to put big $$$ into it, or else I'd just be better off forking out $20k+ for a decent one (which I would not get a cruiser anyhow).

Ive got mates who use landcruisers as tractors.
They get 500,000 + kms out of em.
But are regulary serviced.
They spend 80% of their time off tar.
They get a HARD life.
As long as the body isnt rusty, and their is nothing majory wrong (bent chassis/ diffs / dying motor/ or gearbox)
Id chance it.
Be prepared to do a lot of fixing minor consumables (wheel bearings, seals, bushes etc)
If your handy with the tools - you will do OK.
If you have to pay someone to fixx 100 minor things - better off to buy a better rig.
to me the fact the bloke doesnt even seem to have washed it to sell it could be an idea of how its been treated all its life.
the fact that its been on dirt roads isnt a big issue for me. But you arent paying top condition prices, so expect to have to dish out cash on things on it fairly shortly.
Yeah I can do my own servicing and things like changing shocks etc like that. Engine coversions and such I would need to pay someone as I just dont have the space to do it, or else I'd be doing that myself too.
Yeah I understand the suspension and other items will need attention as it looks all original, although I would expect to change this even if the car had done 150,000km.
Will be checking it out on the weekend and as long as its not making any horrible noises, I'll go ahead with it.
80 Series had a few places where the bodies commonly cracked with extensive dirt road use, not sure about the 100's but body cracks are likely on most vehicles which have done a lot of km on corrugations.
sounds like you'd just be repeating the expensive process you have probably been through with the hilux. Save your dollars and buy a good clean truck, but as previously mentioned around the 10k mark your probably doing ok depending on condition.
I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.
Doing the mods and changes I dont mind as I treat it as like a expensive hobby. I like the way the Hilux is currently setup, although a Cruiser would be better on the road.
I will probably be really only looking at paying around $7k for it as I think thats all its worth as is with the high kms too. For $10k, I'll be keeping my Hilux.
I dont think it has had much (if any beach work) It looks more like red dirt not rust. I would suspect either an ex mining vehicle or one done many outback trips. But for 7k damn i'll have 2 thanks!

I dont believe its a ex mine because its a GXL and not a poverty pack model with vinyl flooring. It needs work and thats why its cheap. Body work, and possibly mechanical.
A mate with the same truck has a few things worn out already which suprised me as its only done 150k's. gear box is shit and that kind of thing.
still an awsome truck and at 7k i would do it as a clean one would be what? 16?? so tidy it up do all your bushes bearing etc should be nicer than the lux.
hell my lux has now done over 300 and the ks dont really worry me.
but get ready to empty your wallet into the fuel tank. seriously thirsty, it will cost 2-2.5 times to run than what your lux does. and if you flog it then more.

The lux is good, although the cruiser would be nicer on longer drives. The lux, being a commercial vehicle can be a bit of a pain as a daily.
The km arent of a big concern because of the price Im looking at paying. As long as it doesnt have any major mechanical problems, i'll be happy with it.
Its also on lpg so it will make the fuel bills alot easier.
Checked it out today and the jury is out on this one
Drives ok, blows a little smoke on idle and the gearbox either needs a service or is getting tired (gear changes not super smooth). Will need minor things done like some tyres and a new windscreen.
What oil should I use? A semi synthetic or just mineral due to the kms?
Also has a sunroof and leather too! although the leather on the steering wheel and driver seat is quite worn
