most popular engine conversions

Post by killalux »

Hey everyone,
I currently have a mobile / home based auto electrical buisnee that operates part time, I am looking at expanding and running the buisness full time. My speciialty is doing standalone engine wiring harnesses for engine conversions, as well as custom wiring jobs for comp trucks, hotrods, etc.
I have been doing these for mostly LS1's for the past 18 months, aswell as a few others here and there.

My question is what are the most popular engine swaps people are doing these days, Just to help me go in the right direction with advertising and such. Please also let me know of non 4wd swaps that people are doing.

Thanks for any input.

There is a ready market for Vitara 16V into Sierra but there are a few variations in Vitara looms.

There may also be a market for Ford 5.0 Windsor into Hilux etc [/u]
V6 Commonwhore motor into just about any pre commo holden is popular too.

a standalone sr20det loom would be a very popular choice. im putting one in an escort and i'd probably get a loom if there was one available and there is plenty of people putting these engines into heaps of different cars.

Stand alone looms for-

Com V6- Series1,2 Ecotec.
Holden INJ 5ltr,
SR20,
RB30, Lots of patrol owners convert the carbed ones to INJ. As well as early holden guys using these.
1UZfe would have to be a very popular one into everything at the moment.
3RZfe is very popular into Hilux's,

Although a lot of these are very easy to wire up stand alone if you can read a wiring diagram if the price was right most wouldnt bother.

I think Stand alone harnesses are where you can make good money as there are a lot of guys that can do the conversion in their back yard but cant get the vehicle from there to an Auto elec to be wired and are scared of the prices they charge mobile.

Once again there are heaps of variations s13, s14 s14a and s15 that i know of alone and they are pretty different. I think s14a and s15 share the same computer and have dual vct. We wired up an s14 loom to a s15 motor using a s14a computer. yes it was a head fark, and ended up with the cam timing on a dash switch. (Dads choice as the car is evil)

Hey mate, I was thinking that the sr20 would be popular. If you want to send me your loom i can make it standalone, Will do it at a reduced rate being the first one i have done.

Thanks tony,
I am finding that many people can get anengine in no worries, But either hate dealing with the electrics, or can't read a wiring diagram.
While the commo V6 and 5LV8 are very popular still, the prob is there is lots of companies doing loom interfaces for them.
The issues there is they are quite cheap cause they don't have to mod the loom at all. Whereas when i do them I mod the loom so that all the relay's and fuses are out of sight and out of the ellements, which makes it hrd to be competitive.

As for the rest, very good suggestions and very little available for them at a good price.

I think the way I have to do them is you send me your harness, and then I mod it and send it back, which is what i do now with the LS1's.
As you mention there is way to many different variants to be able to keep an exchange unit in stock ready to go, Especially with toyota and nissan stuff.

Just in case anyone is wondering about the quality of Steves work.... I can recommend him without a drama...
He has done a TBI injection setup for my Zook and is currently doing a Vitara 16V MPFI loom(into Sierra) for me. :D

The euro diesels would make a geat conversion, But i beleive they would be too expensive to do, And would be a PITA with wiring with security (immobiliser), Altough if you had a big enough budget would be possible

I'm in the process of doing V8 Conversion and will be using Killalux's loom for two reasons.

1. I can install it my self and the run spotties etc myself.
2. He does a complete job will the relays / fuses as standard.

Before I got in contact with him i had quotes ranging from $600 to $2500- and all the quotes included shit i didn't want them to do and even told them I didnt want it done.

I found it very hard to get some one who has done one before and still wanted to change the layout so the fuses and relays were not under the bonnet. One bloke told me " you won't get water up on the fire wall "

Although there might be interface looms out there, none of those companys were as helpful as killalux has been.

i have sold 2 gen3 conversions in the past couple of months. they were going into 318 BMW's.

Have had alot of enquires about BA twin cam motors into early E series falcons but the icc unit is to confusing and most people give up. the motor is bolt in, so if there was someway of making a loom with aftermarket computer you would probbly do alright on fordmods.com we sell alot of AU motors to go into ea-eb-ed etc.

gen3's are very popular at the moment

With the BA's, easiest way would be have the PCM re-flashed to remove security, and than just make up a plug in loom by splicing the BA and E- looms together. Not to hard i don't think? You reckon you could get me a BA engine loom cheap?

I just fitted a 4YEC into my ex 4Y carby hilux. My auto elec said he wouldn't touch it. He lent me a book with the wiring diagrams I needed. I cut and traced all the wires from the computer, ( about 25 in total, used about 15 of them) and wired it all up to the neccesary relays, speed sensor, ignitor, etc. Was a headache for sure. A stand alone harness with instructions would have been great.
