Bundera 2.4 pet vs 2lT diesel.

Post by mercxr6T »

Hey guys and gals. I am looking at buying a bundera. I have a choice beetween a petrol 2.4 that has had a recent rebuild or a 2lt Turbo diesel which has 250xxx. I really want the diesel but at the end of the day I am after something that will last the long trips to fraser with the fam. so I'm after everyones opinion in what is the better rig. I can get the diesel one for 3k and the petrol one for 4k. Thanks alot.

Having only had a petrol one I can't comment on the diesel, but I have had mine for 20 years and it has been great, ultra reliable, the engine is stock standard and fuel economy is a bit average but not prohibitive, but I never put a spanner on it and it goes like the clappers, rapt in the performance, (slows down a bit with a heavy tandem trailer on the back though and stopping it in the wet is an adventure), I say go the 22R.

As long as the turbo is still good the Aussie 2LT will do 500thousand + with no problems.

Having said that i know of lots of 22Rs that have done similar ks.

The one thing the 2LT Bundy has over the 22R bundy is better gearing. The 2LT runs 4.88 diffs and the 22R runs 4.3 or possibly 4.5 diffs from memory.

yeah def back up the diesel 2lt being the bomb.... at 250kms its just run in

you want efficant you'll get it, ultra reliable if looked after with regular servicing (as with any motor....) litttle slow but who's in a hurry when they are going for a wheel...

and yes the gearbox on the diesel models are she sh*t, r series boxes...
 Great platform for v8's/supra motors later down the trac if you get bored, they are build strong as.

go the diesel

to be honest, they are both pretty average motors. having owned both, I can honestly say they are underpowered and and consume too much fuel... IF you modify the vehicle at all - lift it, bigger rubber, anything.

I love bunderas, I have owned three, but a 100hp 4 cylinder engine is not enough for a 1600kg tare vehicle with the aerodynamics of, well lets be honest, a rubiks cube.

for comparison, I had a 2LT diesel bundera with 2" suspension, 2" body, flares, steps, front and rear bars, winch, and it would struggle to maintain 110kmh on the flat, and hills were a nightmare. average fuel economy around 13l/100km. now I have a turbo diesel 80 with 4" lift, 35's, bars winch etc, it goes like a train all day and hills are destroyed like a fat kid eats cake, at about 11l/100km. unless you're coming from a 1956 beetle 1100, any bundera is going to be a performance disappointment.

I can't say i have had the same experience, I am more than happy with my 22R it goes like the clappers, I do agree with you on the fuel though, it is a bit on the thirsty side.

That sounds very nice!

How do you feel about the V8 in the Bundy, any issues, or are you happy with it?

I was considering a Bundy with a 1UZ V8 before I went with the Troopy campervan. I was going to look for the turbo diesel to get the stronger gearbox, coils all round, and maybe the diffs were stronger, but not sure about that.
