Using silicone sealant on Auto pan, ok?

Hi
I had a cork gasket but it leaked on my auto sump/pan so i tried silicone which leaked too. I may have filled it too soon tho (about 24hr, pretty cold down here) but have noticed that the holes are pushed out so there is more pressure around the bolt holes than between.

Will fix this but wanted to check that Permatex Ultra Black HiTemp Silicone RTV Gasket Maker is suitable for ATF?

Bad idea.
i"ve seen filters partly blocked with silicone.

you shouldn't need sealer to make stop it leaking. at most some contact adhesive will work.

If you have leaks there are only ever two reason with auto pans.
1. the pan is not straight. the fix, new pan.
2. over tightening the bolts. the fix, new gasket and gently gently on the bolts.

i have a spare pan which looks better than the other, not sure y i didnt use it before

so you reckon cork is the go?

has anyone used silicone with good results? not sure if i trust the cork now, but probably the fault of a rough pan.

does the cork compress and need retightening?

I use coon on everything, never had a problem. Never used it however on auto trans.

Don't use contact adhesive unless you have old stuff. All new stuff is benzine free and is useless for anything. Even selleys / bostic is crap.

Only use cork, preferably new.

If the pan is looking a little secondhand, gently score the centre face of the cork along the face, (NOT across) with a razor. this will give an extra little ridge to form into the surface of the pan.
If you're stuck with an old gasket, score a "V" notch around it, and fill that (and only that) with gasket goo

is the cork gasket fitted dry? is the adhesive only to aid fitting?
the other pan i have looks pretty good, hopefully it will be right this time, its a real prick to get out past the exhaust

Yup ... fit dry if pan in good nick.

If the bolt holes show signs of having been overtightened ... do the scoring trick, and/or use a touch of gasket goo.

yeah dry and clean is the key. the contact adhesive is only to aid in fitting.
With clean surfaces in good condition cork will seal.

if you are really having trouble try some loctite 'Aviation non-hardening'

just don't use anything that has a change of coming dislodged like a fat bead silicone sealer.

Smear Permatex brown sealer onto the cork.
