Info on Performance TD42's

Post by needalift »

Chasing Info on building a high output TD42. Currently own a 90 model TD42, which i've read is one of the stronger models with piston cooling jets, stronger pistons/rods... Is this true?

I've also read that Nissan or UD released a DI TD42 engine in a japanese truck which never got released in Aus. Why dont people go down this path when building their TD's?

IS there any shops who specialise in TD42 performance rebuilds? i wouldnt mind talking with someone for advice but i'd be undertaking the rebuild myself.

I've heard of people talkin about 200kw at the wheels. How realistic and reliable is this? What are common component combinations?

Probably get burned for posting this and get told to search the site but im sure there are others interested in knowing... Im thinking owners of big horsepower TD42's might not want to give their secrets away... Others will probably swear that fitting a standard LS1/2 is going to be a cheaper option... Anyway... All advice is good... Cheers

There was a rundown of a td42 built by joel from pgs which had big kw.
Try a search, I think it may have been in the for sale section a while back.

Try putting in "TD42 and RWKW and rebuild" or something like that into the search engine. use the "and" it seems to help.

$20k will be sufficient to get it to around 250kw

getting 200kw from a td42 is reasonably simple task. with a properly built pump, and the right turbo set up. mate had one making just shy of this as a daily driver. It lasted very well on stock internals and over 200k on the clock but as mentioned earlier it will cost a few $$$$ to get than sort of power, not to mention making the driveline last

Call Andy at DieselTec, or Joel at PGS.

There's quite a few threads (Nissan and Members sections) with heaps of info on 100rwkw through to over 200rwkw.

Its all about the $$$$.

Then maybe you should take that advice? You dont think nobody has asked this before?

Can you blame some?? Thousands of bux are spend on trial and error...
Others will probably swear that fitting a standard LS1/2 is going to be a cheaper option...
without doubt, it would be a great idea.

but that all depends on what you wanna do with the rig.

Have you considered the chev 6.6L duramax. would be fairly costly, but would have more like 300kw on a stock, reliable motor. And i may not cost much more than a fully built TD42 ~ $25k

or as you said LS2 would be cheapest option for HP

6.6 duramax more power, less fuel consumtion and simply awsome sound!

And you can fit up a 6spd auto at the same time.

The Duramax will be good once there are more out there, and maybe a kit for it, but I dont see that happening in a big hurry.. bit of a bummer really..
Shame someone doesnt take it on as a business against brunswick.. look how successful they are!

And while they start a $11K US for Engine and Auto Box, I think it will be a while longer.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2005-Che ... ccessories

But you can buy a motor for around $4500 to $6500 US.

At the risk of loosing potential customers.
Making the power is the easy part, the cost is making it last! Power comes from pressure and heat, anyone who tells you you can make 4 times the engine output without sacrificing longevity is full of crap. Increased power means increased prressure on the rings, bores, pistons, bearings and so on.

Be smart and don't think you are going to build a motor that makes a serious 200 + rwkW and will last 300 + klms as thats not the way it works, realistically the percentage increase in power will mean the same percentage in reduced life expectancy. If you want a 200 rwkw engine that lasts 300k klms buy a 6.5 lite engine that is designed to make it for that period of time.
