Denco over standard, worth it?

Post by JenoNT »

G'day chaps, new to the forum, let me say, I love your work!

Got a GU 4.2 factory turbo with a 3 inch zaust and dump pipe, goes quite well.

Was looking at intercoolers and have a question I'm hoping someone can help me with. How much extra go will replacing the factory nissan turbo with the Shwitzer get me?

See options are, just do the intercooler, or go the whole hog and replace the turbo and add the intercooler to match. Question is, is it worth it? Or is just adding the intercooler better value for money.

Appreciate any comments from those that have travelled the same route.

Cheers, Jeno in Darwin

Is it worth it? To some people yes.. it comes down to expectations. To some people no it isnt.

But before that I'd plan what you want out of it.. 200rwkw, 900Nm, etc etc
Then talk to people in the know on how to get to that position.

I'd be lookin at a garrett.

Was given this by Denco when they did my Troll. They where putting a upgrade kit together for TD42T's

From what I understand it was a replacement turbo and intercooler. Best to ring them to find out what is in the kit.

ummm wtf?

Why measure (calculate) the power at the engine, but measure the torque at the wheels?
Rum injected

TD42T shorty... got some bolt on and some custom stuff.

Read about it here!

Ben i'd say that by those numbers it is RWKW, not FWKW.

Jeno, if your not super-fussed about dollars, i'd go a Garrett GT2860RS ball bearing turbo, and a Laminova cored w/a intercooler, and if you have some more coin available - get pump mods done too.

Should prove to be quite an improvement from your current setup.

Yea, I'd agree with all that.. should get it done for $8-10k all up and have some decent power.
Or chuck a V8 in it.

8-10k is a big arsed FAIL in my book for the amount of outlay to HP.

Thanks champs for the replies, really appreciate it! :D

One of the problems with living in Darwin is we don't really have a performance diesel workshop up here. Yes we have a place that has a 4wd dyno and they do pumps and injectors but they won't/don't do any sort of research or look at anything that is not tried and tested. Don't get me wrong, they are good blokes and they do a good job, but they are not really into PERFORMANCE type work.

Matt.Mcminn, thanks for the post, you blokes are definately into it in a big way! Great work, when would you have that set up available in "kit form" and would it marry up nicely to a garrett turbo?

Thanks again blokes, I'll let you know how I go!

If you're half handy working on your own car, you can just buy a "package" from Matt/Andy and bolt it on yourself.

I know Andy does a full ball bearing upgrade kit already.

Laminova kit= $3000
BB turbo upgrade= $2000
Already have exhaust.
Pump mods roughly= $1500
Dyno time= $500

Very roughly, $7000. Would "probably" net 150-170rwkw.
