1 litre carbs on 1.3? * Now twin 800cc carbs on 1.3

Post by Kitika »

G'day,
A mate of mine has a couple of 1litre carbs that I can have and was wondering if a single 1 litre carb would flow enough for a 1.3? Or would it be better to run two? Has anyone else out there done this or have pics? I have read somewhere that someone has put twin 1 litre carbs on a 1.6vit motor but didn't see any pics of their setup.
Cheers for any info.

I do realize 1 litre carbs are side draft and a new manifold will have to be made! Shouldn't stall as readily as the down draft carbies on angles i'm hoping.

my 1ltr carb never stalls on hills, but keep in mind there are a couple of different types on the 1ltrs with the later model (96) being different to the earlier ones. I reckon it would be a mass amount of work for little gain unless running higher comp, 2" zorst and a decent air intake to realise any real world gain.

I have a fairly fresh rebuilt engine with slightly higher compression and a 2 inch exhaust system with extractors. Just picked up the carbies this morning they are mikuni solex carbies and off an old suzuki carry van. Got a rebuild kit and few spare gaskets etc with them so i can overhaul one if need be. There is no emissions crap hanging of these carbs and they are manual choke just how i like em :)

im pretty sure all 1ltr carbs are manual choke. They arent to bad to rebuild if you can get the screws out they generally require a impact drive. I supplied a rebuild kit from suzistore ($80) and had the carby exchange in morley rebuild it for $150. Suzistore quoted me over $450 to supply and rebuild.
I would just cut off the old carby flange and get a flange made up and welded on the original manifold to suit the two carbs.
You should have room under the drivers side of the engine bay to put 2 stock airboxes to feed the carbs.
Maybe use a thick spacer between the carbs and manifold to allow better atomisation of the fuel before ignition.

Are they twin side draughts?

No they are single sidedrafts mikuni solex carbs. Just went out and looked at my brothers 1litre and an LJ 80 and they are actually off the 800cc motors. They don't look too hard to mount as twins, but may need to have 2 choke cables...
How would I set up the water pipes and thermo stat housing on a custom manifold? I could get the original manifold modified but cos it's alloy I wouldn't be able to weld it myself.

What thickness metal should I use as the base plate for the manifold? I have plenty of 3mm thick steel that'd do the job but i'm alittle worried that it may warp when I weld on to it. Will 3mm be thick enough or should I go get some 6mm or something?

get a lazer cut 8 to 10mm flange.

Action laser cutting in ashfeild will do the cutting, they an exhaust flange for me for $60. Briffa engineering in malaga can cut and weld the manifold pretty cheap. I had him move the throttle body position on my VL and polish the manifold for about $250. I know your in the sticks so you may have to find a good engineering shop down your way or come up to perth to organise it.
