Couple of years back 4wd Action (then 4wd Monthly) tested most big name brands
Interesting read if you can get a back issue

FWIW, surprisingly the Supercheap Autos blue strap was the best

what the hell you doing to your straps to destroy them that quickly?

We abuse the CRAP out of our straps at work- thinks like using 2 of them on the same points to drag an 8T truck out with a 12T truck!

You need to learn how to shovel more before breaking out the straps.

I got that issue was a good test both wet and dry, supercheap (never shopped there before or again) had the best by a good margin!

I use crane lifting straps have for a few years now defenetly NOT snatchies but handy alot of the time, winching, towing, slow recovery.

Lifting straps are just that they are for LIFTING. the reason the are different is they have NO stretch so unless you want to fark everything on your vehicle or your mates don't use them.they make great tow ropes however.
Snatch strapas on the otherhand have about 20% stretch so as to make the recovery smoother and more progressive and not wreck your bus.

easier would be to just get bogged less or get a hand winch :finger:

where are you loc? tiny
if your DEAD SET on a lifting strap I deal with company's in vic that will help you out pm me

I would have thought Black Rat is the best of the best without going completely custom. But if you broke them, well, youre prob doing something wrong.

ARB recalled and destroyed theirs after that article.

New ones they developed are supposed to be much better.

I've never broken one with the laden 105, so you must be gettign pretty stuck, or doing some awful recoveries. I would question your technique.

Kiwibacon made a good point a while ago - 9000kg strap with a 3000kg car = 3g acceleration. OUCH. That would be very violent.

i always used a lift strap until recently - the lift one was 8m long and just too dam heavy and cumbersome, and well over rated for my zuk!

I replaced it with a snatchie from anaconda - $50 or so, 6m long and i think from memory 20% stretch - although i've not utilised its stretchiness - only used it as a tow strap once to help a jimny up a tricky section (to stop him falling sidways into a rut).

I figure if you use it once a year its going to last forever - especially if its kept clean and dry.

im not a fan of the 60km/hr recovery method most seem to employ =) haha

amen ... i have seen some tragic results from bull at a gate snatches ....

seen a pajeros chassis mounted recovery hook sheer off and sling back at god knows what speed into the rear of a hiluc dual cab back window ..... slow and steady and a bit of prior planning will always win out.

I have 2x Supercheap straps and 2x black rats ... both are equally as good as each other ....

The strap that won that comparo is no longer sold at Supercheap for some reason. I went for a look for one recently and was surprised to see new equipment in there and no sign of that "Tow 2 Go" Strap...

I have a supercheap one and an old ARB one aint broke either. I think it comes down to how they are used.. Also not a fan of the flat chat recoveries I see people do. Maybe buy a winch. I have broken some old white supercheap jobs.. but they are still good until they have 3< knots in them :P

I think you are not looking after your straps or getting way more stuck than I ever have!!!!

Once they get muddy and wet, if you dont gently clean and dry them, they will fall apart quick smart.

I've broken a 'just straps' (white) and am still using a 'supercheap' (blue). Mind you, each have done heaps of snatches and i do little in the way of caring for them. Just roll em up, wet or dry, dirty or clean.

I don't know what you're doing to go through so many straps. It'd probably be cheaper to get tyres, lockers, horsepower, whatever's lacking on your rig. Or get your mates to use their own snatchies when you're recovering them.

As for the lifting slings, fine for use as tow ropes, winch ext straps, etc. but not as a snatch strap. Also, note with rated straps the SWL/WLL rated sling has a 6:1 safety factor incorporated into its rating, whereas a 4x4 strap is marked with a breaking strength. So a green 2t rated sling is actually good for 12t, which is twice as much as a 12000lb (6t) 4x4 strap.

No bronco is going to way as much as a Hino fire truck, and ive recovered one of those burried to the axles with an LC79 and two 8T ARB straps.

Gave it a few gentle tugs first up, nothing happened, so then we broke out the shovels. few more gentle (20kph or so) pulls and out it popped.

If it wont move after 2-3 slow attempts, start to shovel. If it still wont move after that, continue to shovel and break out the heavier gear (winch, High lifts, etc)

Hard on the gear, tiny

Looking after straps is the key, if possible try not to let your muddy strap dry before washing it, get it straight home and wash it, dip it in a creek, whatever.

I have owned numerous straps and with my dads guidance on taking care of them, never broke one, and they have copped a hiding, i have passed them onto friends in need, the oldest strap i have is bout 10yrs old, dunno wat brand but its still good!
Get out there!!

Found this last time I was onsite - that's broken recovery gear for you.

No - I don't know the tonnage. I would bet Haul truck though so 150 - 300 ton ish depedning on load.

Photo's dont' really give scale. Not the umm "score" in the pin of the D shackle.

Post by tiny80 »

i try to keep them clean roll them up just they brake in due time
when they are in use its when a double reduction block on my 9500lb
warn wont get them out .
i to aggree speed is not the answer but some times
there is just no choice big hills less speed =more wheel spin less pull power
i dont want a crane strap for snatching just winching on a double
reduction block safely and a product that will last
i do 6000 km ave per year in the high country vic
most on as hard as tracks as i can find
its lifted locked turbo lpg 35 claws so if its stuck its bad

The best snatchy

Post by MICKB75 WITHTHELOT »

the best by far is not a strap it is a strop from A NOBLE & SONS look to pay around the $150 for the 8m 8ton. They have a huge range 8ton up to 300ton there is a size for everyone.

A snatchy has around the 20% stretch, the strop has arount the 33% that is all i use now. I pulled a fully loaded gu pootruck bogged to the doors with my BJ73 shorty.
