Question
Well as you all know I have had problems with the fan, air con and radiator fan in the Roza. Yesterday I took it back to the car dealership where I bought it to have it all fixed under warranty and they only fixed the air con and replaced the radiator fan. Didn't fix my inside fan or replace the cover on the radiator fan .
I have 2 questions....
Does anyone know how much it is to replace the black casing around the radiator fan?
Is it going to hurt the car by driving around with the radiator fan protector missing until I sort all this out?
THanks

i'm not sure how hot it gets in aussie.... pretty hot i'm sure from what it sounds from the rest of you folks... that black plastic surrounding the fan is called a shroud and it helps your fan draw air into the radiator... so as long as its not too hot and ur moving... u should be ok... but when u get stuck in traffic.. watch out.... i'd be REALLY careful there and get that shroud fixed asap! and take it back to the dealer! bitch at em... they HAVE to fix it i would assume... i got no idea what kind of laws you guys got concerning that but i'm sure its simliar to what we got here in the u.s.... good luck

Hey don't you work at a legal firm?
I rang consumer affairs as soon as I got home yesterday I have to put it all in a complaint (which I have done first thing this morning) and I will be sending it off this morning. I had a lot of words to the guy at the dealership yesterday and they weren't pleasant.
I will give a daihatsu place a call today and try and get the part. Lucky I only drive in the cool of the morning and afternoons.

I've used them in the past for shonky places and had very good results.
I just had being treated like a stupid woman. I was told yesterday that I should have heard something blow up....I travel over 100km a day in that car I know every single little noise and what it is I would know if something blew up - I would have heard it which I didn't.
Oh well the complaint has now been sent off hopefully something is done soon. Will let you all know.
Thanks for the advise guys

I'm sure some of the guys off the forum from up your way will help you sort the problem out if the legal way doesn't work!
By the way start mentioning the name of the caryard on here- never know that might lose them some sales (the best form of payback). Just don't slander them- keep to the facts.

I sold it this week to my gf so I still get to drive it AND do up my zook
I don't think it wanted to go though, I noticed a brake light out before taking it for a RWC this morning so went to change it. When I took off the cover it fell into 2 pieces. No worries I'll go to supercheap and get another..... don't sell em....... fark no one does!!!! Wreckers...... all the covers have been sold already!!!! This must happen a lot!!!!
My mechanic has it now and is trying to source another one and I quote, "have you got another car for a tomorrow"
Don't worry, they have to fix it by law.
In the first three months of owning mine the following was replaced/ repaired:
-radiator leaking from crack in end tank
-power steering pulley repaired due to being loose and worn (drive belt came off much like yours- that's how I discovered it.....)
-water pump replaced after it started to leak
It was all fixed under warranty, I got my money's worth.

Well up here it is 3 months or 5000 km. I have already done 5000km since owning it (all the above happened before the 5000 km though so its ok)

The simple answer is no. And its called a radiator fan shroud.
Agree, havent had the scroud on for 3 years.
Shame you had a bit of an issue with the dealer though, you just tell em you are a solicitor. (sort of true)

Well I am still being very careful and keeping an eye on the temp gauge anyway, I would still like it fixed though. As I walked out the other day I told them they woudl be hearing from my solicitor. I shoudl hear from OFT either today or tomorrow they rang on friday and they have my complaint so fingers crossed.

Well I have just heard from the Office of Fair Trading. The not so lovely people at Pelican Motors in Caloundra have offered to fix the first speed on the fan, and fit the Radiator Fan Shroud for me but I have to buy the Fan Shroud Part which they will buy and sell to me for cost price. I am not sure how much that is just yet the OFT is going to get back to me. I was told that it was my responsibility to immediately stop driving the car when the "explosion" occured. What explosion I am not sure as I didn't hear one and well I call them immediately after the air con stopped working, not my fault I have to drive to work every day and they can't fit me in for a week. Oh well guess the above it better than them saying no

Ring around a couple of dealers and get a price for the shroud- so you know how much it should cost. Those bastards will probably get it for trade price and then charge you full retail, thus making money out of the deal!
You could always buy the shroud yourself and supply it. At least that way the shonky dealer can't make any money out of the transaction.

Got a call this morning from OFT - Pelican Motors got a trade price quote for a fan shroud - $52.00 (not genuine) Funny how I can get a genuine one for $59.50. Anyway its all sorted, I just have to call them and make a day and time to have everything fixed.

Fan shroud! What's that?
When I bought my FZA it had no shroud and for some reason the RACV test officer listed it as a roadworthy item. The mechanics at the dealers made up a fibreglass shell to guard the top half of the fan from stray fingers.
Needless to say it's been kicking around in the study for nearly a year with no temp problems in traffic or heat.

OK for all those that think the fan shroud does nothing YOUR WRONG. What the shroud does is stops the fan from pulling air from around the radiator. this is why they exist. if it was just to stop you sticking ya fingers in it then it would just be at the top and not all the way arround. Heres an example in my escort panelvan i used to have big issues with overheating when sat in trafic even on cool days. spent heaps on getting rad flushed and even replaced it once to find prob was still there. Was told to put a shroud on it one day when i was having a complain about it to a shella. did it and have never had a problem with it since.
Believe me they do make a difference aspecially if sitting in trafic.

My shroud does something alright, it lurks on the floor of the study waiting to attack unweary bare feet. Obviously you're correct, a car with a shroud is going to run cooler, but aren't they a b!t@h to work around!
I guess I must be a lazy sod who had to remove the thing one time too many.
For $60 you're not going to go wrong, you're just going to be swearing a bit more often while working in the engine bay (unless it saves your fingers i guess)
Here's the nasty piece of shonky fibreglass that made it's way into my F300
