GQ with RB30 - any good?

Post by matsmad »

Ive been offered a LWB GQ with the RB30 carby engine for 5g. Its got winchbar, 33's and 5 inch lift. Ive had 3 GQ's previously but all with a TB42. Are the 3 litre motors any good and whats resale like?
06 Grand Vitara Prestige, 2" lift, Kumho A/Ts, ARB winch bar, snorkel, spotties. Also a Regal 2150 LSC Volva Penta 350 gsi duoprop, and a kayak ;-)

its not a lemon, but its obviously AS STANDARD a bit underpowered when it comes to a 4.2.

$5k is probably way too much. What year is it?

I would'nt pay 5g for it.

I don't know why but people selling GQ's seem to think they have Golden chassis rails or something

Mind you throw in some boost and the RB30 is fun

Is 5k really too much considering it has 33s and a 5" lift? Seems reasonable to me, maybe I'm out of touch with GQ prices.

5K is way to much maby 3K if it has fruit like bars and steps/sliders or other goddies ..

The RB is a great motor tho let down by the carby in the GQ fit the EFI from the R31 skyline with its computer and it will improve it tho the best bet would be to turbo the engin you can easly get 300HP from the standard engin as long as the thing is in good health improve things like rod bolts and pistons and do a head job on it and 400+ HP is not hard with the right induction :D :D :D
Cheers

hey guys i have a rb30 gq when i first brought it was a slug so i did a turbo/feul injection conversion and i goes really well. if you want a turbo petrol motor it's a lot cheaper to do it to a rb30 than the 4.2.

the reason's why he suggested the skyline loom for the EFI is because its a separate item, where as on the VL, its integrated.

Big/stupid numbers from the RB30 turbo are nothing new, and many people have been there and done that backwards in the dark.

something good is a RB30 bottem end, is to combined it with the RB25 head, so you get the torque of the rbdirty, and the twin cam ability to rev its tits off with the with the 25 head.....
Not only is the skyline loom a better set up the whole mapping and tune is better on the skyline over the VL hell the skyline even got cold air induction from factory ....

RB30 bottom ends are ok from factory tho like all nissan motors they have rod bolts that like to let go at about 400HP best fix is to use a chev V8 3/8th rod bolt linished down in a lathe to fit the nissan rods and this makes the bottom end neigh on bullet proof ...

Reddo is on the money with the RB25 head this will make the thing stupidly power full to the point were the gearbox will most likely not be up to the task of driving such a large truck hard in low range turning 2 or more large tyres tho it would be fun to drive whilst the gearbox was in one piece ....

Now you have the recipe lets see a fully sick turbo'd GQ with a huge front mount for a grille packing 600+ pony's under the bonnet
Cheers

listed as a FS5R90A

information here

http://www.az-zbum.com/information.transmission.shtml

From above;

"it has been generally regarded that the FS5R90A transmission found in the 84-86 turbo 5 speeds is not very strong. People seem to blow these up with as little as 300 horsepower. The good side is they are cheap and easy to rebuild. Rebuild kits are as cheap as $125 on ebay."

For the rb 25 and 26 convertion have look at
http://trinity.frontierisp.net.au/~rowan/twincam.htm
however it has been said that;

lay80n wrote:...there are plenty of performance upgrades for these motors, and as already said the RB25,20and 26 heads can be made to fit, though its not a bolt on job, requireing oil galeries to be re-drilled etc. Though these heads are designed to work with high revs, not really a setup for a good 4wd. Parts are cheap and easily available. But as already said, the motor has a big truck to push.

Yeah I have found that mine doesnt like steep hill's. It will sit there for a bit then stall. After that she wont start again till she is on the flat.

I have bought one of these recently. Cheap i my opinion compared to what i found when looking for a GQ.

I read on another site if you use a N/A RB25 and add turbo its less mods to the RB30 to start with. Just need to put in better valve springs.

I am very keen on the RB25 head turbo idea. Anyone got some more info?

I dont want big horse power monster, just improvement in drivability and economy..

(REDO your link on the conversion wouldn't work for me)

Have a look around, I know there was a fully rebuilt RB30 bottom end with the modifications needed to fit the turbo rb25 head, with the extra mounting point for the twin cams belt etc for sale on Boost cruising.

Ill do some looking around for you and get you some links.

I've made some calls, and can get the head, manifolds, turbo, loom, ECU, air flow meter, coil pack, so basically everthing from te top of an RB25ET.
$1300. Not sure if its a good price or not but a start.

The loom for this is seperate from the loom for the rest of the car.

Dont think i would fit it myself. Any ideas on who would be good to fit it up in syd or wollongng?
Price?

(EDIT)
Some of the info i have found for those interested.
These are all skylines but gives an idea of what could be expected from the mods.
http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums ... 04332.html

Detailed conversion
http://users.tpg.com.au/cobra30/twincam.htm

From what i've read, all standard parts from RB25ET can be used s long as your not chasing big power, Apart from turbo (too small)
And as long as manifolds clear in the engine bay, but cant find any info on it being done in a patrol.

Also if not keen on going turbo, just the NA RB25 head, extractors cold air intake should see around 200Kw but might lack in torque for such a heavy truck.

Info on NA RB25 head.
